Colt Trooper Mk III's collector's items now?

I was just up to the "Gun Library" of a local BigBoxStore ....and saw several Colt Trooper MkIII's in the case, with price tags I was used to seeing on Pythons and other "Snake Guns" ...... 11-1200+ dollars for guns in worse shape than the one I have ......

Don't get me wrong, I do really like mine ....... I have not shot a nicer DA Revolver .....the DA pull is so smooth .... but I worry about longevity. They don't make parts for these anymore, and I like to shoot, not collect.

I am seriously thinking about selling mine, and getting another .357, maybe a Ruger GP100, to try to wear out ...... thoughts?

In my area they are half that in real nice shape. That said it's double from several years ago.

I suspect they will stay in the case at those prices
Don't confuse a price tag with actual value

MkIII Troopers are a more robust action than the earlier Colts. I doubt seriously if you will be able to wear it out, but if you do, so what? Since you already have the Trooper, I am going to guess that it is already paid for, and has been since you got it. Therefore, since it costs you nothing to keep it, I see no real reason to dump it to get something else.

I can almost guarantee that the double action on the Ruger will take a bit of work to get anywhere near as smooth as the Colt.

Those stores that you mention are notoriously overpriced on certain guns and, IMO, should not be used as a price guide.

I think that you are being influenced by too many opinions and personal prejudices from the internet.

They may be more robust, but being sintered iron, they are not repairable, and there are no parts to be had for replacing those that wear out.

Traded this morning for a Ruger and cash.

Not made since 1985, but I doubt they're collector pieces. Mind you, prices will vary from place to place based on condition anyway.

jimbob , glad you got a Ruger it will last a life time. If you ever get another Trooper there are parts- just find someone that deals mostly in Colts and they should have contacts and no problem.
Almost anything with the Colt name seems collectable these days and has gone up a good deal over the past decade - but so has S&W and a number of other for that matter. I have been dealing in firearms for 50 years and sometimes can't believe the prices -I just a Colt Military Ace NIB go for over seven grand !

I sold a Lawman Mk III 2" snubbie (.357) a few days ago for $500 cash to a LGS. I also sold a Colt Trooper 4" (.38 Spl) for $350 at the same time. Went and purchased a S&W Model 19 snubbie. The Snake Guns have really gone up in price. I have a few still, but I wanted the Model 19 snubbie more. Wanted one of those for many many years.

In 1980, I traded a Mauser P08 Luger straight across for a new Trooper MKIII. It was a 6" in .357. I've been weeding out my blued revolvers, so I sold the Trooper about a year ago. It was an easy 99%, and was indistinguishable from a new gun, with box and papers. My dealer had lined up a buyer for $600, but I declined the offer. I put it up on Gunbroker for $800, and it sold in 18 hours.

A few weeks later, I found a very nice 6" Ruger GP100 stainless on GB. It had the older style stocks, which I preferred, and it now replaces the Trooper in my safe.

Out of three DA Colt revolvers, a mint .44 Anaconda is the only Colt revolver that I still own.

I believe Colt still keeps parts on the Mark III and Mark V series revolvers.

Hope you enjoy your new Ruger. I prefer my 6" Mark III as my dominant 357 shooter. If it breaks and for some reason it is not fixable, I'm not too worried about it. I have replacements.
