whats the story on these?

my mom's bf came over and his friend brought it as sean (mothers bf) told him i might be intersted in it.

has a 4" barrel looks like its had less than 50 rds in it....very clean gun.

trigger is a bit heavier than the ruger that i have now...

he wants $250 for it..

oh and i cant seem to find a serial # anywhere at all on it...what years where thye made?

Thanks

Chad

The Trooper MkIII was Colt's all purpose adjustable sighted service revolver. They were made from 1969 thru 1983. They were and still are quite popular (where have you been hiding :D).
$250 is a very good price for one if in decent condition. The serial number should be found on the frame after you open the crane (swing out the cylinder).

Colt made these as economy 357 Magnums. They are second only to Colt Pythons as being a excellent revolver. $250.00 is roughly $100.00 under the normal value. I would leap at that deal.

Go back in time about 10 years and the $250 number would have been pretty typical pricing. Now, I would buy it in a minute if I liked it and had the money. The Colt factory trigger should be considerably better than most Rugers unless the Ruger had a trigger job. Anwway, in as-new condition, the price is a bargain and I would buy it.

Thanks for the replies guys...going to go shoot it tommrow and hopefully purchase it tommrow as well...its in VERY good condtion i mean i doubt its had 50 rounds through it...looks brand new.

owner said its 30ish years old...

anywhere where I can look what year it was made by the serial number?...

i'll show some pics tommrow....

Thanks

Chad

This site has Colt numbers up through 1978.
http://proofhouse.com/colt/

If it was made after that, I have a list that goes up through 1985.
Post the number as A1234XX and I can date it for you.

You can also call Colt and they will give you a production date over the phone.

Keep in mind that the hammer and trigger were made of sintered (powder metallurgy) steel, and some haven't worn well. I believe that Colt rectified that when they went to the MK. V version.

Colt: Great historic firearms. What happened?

Howdy,

Good luck with your Trooper Mk III. I still own a Detective Special and have owned 3 Pythons and an Anaconda. Wonderful guns; I wish I could hit the side of a BARN with my Detective Special, though ;)
Colt had so many famous and popular models, and they've virutally abandoned the civilian firearms market! What a shame! I'd like to see colt start making the Python, Detective Special, and all thier other famous pistols and revolvers again. Looks like they're abandoning thier most loyal customers to avoid frivolous lawsuits. What a pity. :(
I think it's be great if someinvestors bought Colt and moved them to a 2nd Amendment freindly state like..Louisiana maybe. Just my two cents.

Colt Trooper

A Colt Trooper MKIII was my first and is my only revolver. I have the 4 inch nickel plated type. I paid $230 OTD for a very good/ excellent condition one, so as you describe yours it sounds like a good deal. The double action trigger is heavy, but the SA is light. If you call Colt and give them the serial number they will tell you the year of manufacture.

I just bought this one online in excellent condition for $279.00. I figured anything under $300.00 for this gun is a good deal. So enjoy... :D

Started my career, issued a Colt MK III in 78. Tried to buy it from the department after they forced us into Glocks, no deal the gov didn't trust us enough
I'd jump at one for $250.00
