Colt trooper Mark4

A guy at work has a colt trooper mark 4 for sell at $400 he says its in good shape I haven't seen it yet was wondering if this is a good price?

This is the 1st used gun I have bought what all do I need to look at to tell what kind of shape its in? Thanks 4 any info u could provied:)
 
I don't believe there ever was a Trooper Mark 4 (or IV). They went from the Mark III to the Mark V. That would be an attractive price for a Mark III in good shape - I have a couple of them and they're very solidly built, and great shooters. I don't know much about the Mark V model, but I suspect that would be a good price for one of them as well.
 
If it is a MK III it is built like a tank. It does have one weak point. The firing pin in made out of sintered metal. If it breaks only then Colt factory has the special jig to replace it. Sintered metal was an early form of MIM parts. I have a Colt Lawman MKIII and it is my favorite gun of all I own. I make sure I used snap caps when I dry fire. The mkV series does not have sintered parts.

The Trooper Mark III and Trooper Mark V were extremely strong revolvers.
Master gunsmith Jerry Kuhnhausen thought they were the strongest medium frame DA revolvers ever made.
They were expressly designed for unlimited shooting with factory .357 Magnum ammo.

The only possible weakness is that you need to use snap caps to dry fire or risk a broken firing pin.
Firing pin replacement in these models requires a trip back to Colt for replacement, or risk damaging the frame.

Later, Colt fitted the Mark V with a full lug barrel and made it in stainless steel. At that time they changed the name from Trooper Mark V to the King Cobra.
 
And the other weakness of the design- the OCCASIONAL breakage of the trigger at the pivot point. :)

Either a MK III or a MK V. If it's in good condition thats an excellent price. And as noted above the design is extremely strong. All of the "Mark" guns I've ever fired were very accurate as well. I have a Metropolitan MK III that routinely outshoots MUCH fancier guns.
 
I would have been all over that one. I assume it is a 357 mag version, correct? You did real well. You could easily sell if for $550 or a bit more if you had a mind to based on your description.
 
Yes its a 357, I bought a new sp101 2'' in 357 about 3 weeks ago and was not as excited about it as I am the colt.:D

And unless my famaly is hungery it will go to my son when I pass on:)
