Just asking. My friend has got a Colt SP1 put up he bought it about 15-18 yrs ogo for an investment and said he would sell it for 1400 dollars. It comes with about 20 magazines 20 and 30 rounders, and about 500 rounds of ammo. He's never shot it. It just sits I'n closet I'n tactical bag. Fair price? Are they good, accurate guns. It's the short m-4 carbine. I believe

Well, the ammo is worth about 200 dollars give or take. The mags are worth about ten bucks a piece (twenty rounders being more desireable than 30 rounders), I have no idea what the bag it is in is worth, so he is really asking about 1000 dollars for the rifle.

It ain't a screaming deal but I can't see anything wrong with it.

Just to give you some perspective I got an SP1 carbine with 5 20 round mags, about 100 rounds of ammo in pouches, and a Colt 22 drop in conversion for $1100. I don't know if I stole it but I thought it was a fair deal. Only thing missing was a Colt scope.

If it's a short carbine, it's not a true SP1 (...and someone correct me if I am wrong.)

The SP1 is the very early version without forward assist and typically is a standard 20" rifle. If it's a 16"er, it's something else, unless it's been built up.

An SP1 Carbine has no forward assist either - other than the collapsible stock, different flash hider and handguards, its and SP1. I have one, no forward assist, metal collapsible stock, thin barrel. I've never even fired it - has been sitting in my safe since the early '90's.

These things used to go for upwards of $1,500. Really nice ones now sell for about $1,000. They do have and will continue to have some collector value - just not a whole lot right now with the flood of AR's in every conceivable shape and size. There are really only 3 things going for it: it's a Colt; it doesn't have a sear block so you can drop in a registered DIAS; and it has the right kind of bolt for a registered lightning link to work.

But, you don't need the SP1 as a host for your R-lightning Link or RDIAS - now there's tons of lowers, uppers, bolt configurations that can be made to work, I believe. So........it's a Colt.
