Colt sistema fixer upper questions.

I bought an argentinian colt sistema 1927
last summer for about 300 bucks.
It was refurbished by some outfit called
VAM Dist Co in Ohio

Anyway It is a stock military 1911A1
tight as a drum, accurate and reliable

The only problem was the hammer was of the
masochistic design that chopped up the web of
my hand like a quisenart.

I went ahead and put an extended beavertail grip
safety and the new type commander hammer
for about 90 bucks.

This gun shoots as good as the kimbers I've tried
even with crude combat sights.

Since I plan on this being my primary CCW
is there anything else I should consider
adding or changing that would make this gun
more suitable for that purpose?

Should I change from the stock plastic grips?

I also would like advice on what brand magazines
to buy. I have tried some different ones
and the feed lips wear out very fast and seem to be the achilles heel for reliable functioning.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If it's accurate and reliable, other than nicer grips and possibly better sights, any work will probably only make it less accurate and reliable.

Better grips will look better, and will give a better grip. The newer style, higher and wider sights will make it easier to get on target faster. You might want to replace the springs with new ones, but don't get started with "extra" power ones. The gun was designed by J.M. Browning to work with the standard strength springs.

For magazines, most any higher quality mags, like Colt factory or Wilson should be perfect.

As I said, since it's accurate and reliable, quit while you're ahead.

I don't know what grips yours came with, but the ones that came on mine look just fine, checkered plastic grips. If it's reliable and accurate, that's the principal attributes you're looking for in a carry gun, I'd buy it a nice holster! :)

Probably the best money I have spent on my Systema is for better sights. I put King's three-dot sights on it. Second best was the Nowlin drop-in "trigger job" and Wilson beavertail. If you are happy with your trigger pull, you need not spend that money. Mine pulled at something around 15 pounds before the trigger components were changed.
