I just purchased a new Colt SA Army Model P1950, serial number S559XXA. It has a 5.5" barrel in caliber 44-40 and has a blue/case color finish. Other than that is there anything particularly noteworthy about this firearm? I bought it because it was at a good price and I've always wanted to have one.

Congrtulations on your new purchase. Did tou buy this gun as a shooter or did you have some storage area at home that needed filled? Thats a great model you picked up for all around use. My first Colt was a 5 1/2" 45 Colt 27 years ago. In this last month I purchased 2 Colt SAA's both have the screw from the front holding the base pin in rather than the cross pin method. Both are in 45 Colt, one is a 4 5/8" and the other is a 3" ejectorless Sheriff's model. The "44-40" or shall I say what Colt cant say "44WCF" is a great cartridge but incase your interested you can also have a 44 Special cylinder fit to your gun by Colt for not to bad a price. I cant say enough good things about the new breed of 3rd Gen. guns mine are great.

Thanks for the info. Maybe you can help me understand a small point. I called Colt to find out the bore dia. and throat size. They refused to tell me. In your experience is Colt now using .429" or .427" for their 44-40 bores? I suspect the former since they are offering to fit a 44 Spl. cylinder. I also suspect they have standardized on ~.430"-.431" throat size. Do you know?

Don't know what size bore they're using but would not assume either way. The .44Spl cylinder is not any indication, as they've done so for several years and USFA offers same. Not a big deal to push a .44Spl bullet down a traditional .44-40 bore. Only way to find out for sure is to slug it.

Are these Colt cylinders readily swappable between 44-40 & 44 Spl ??

Never taken one off so just do not know what it takes-

Oldfalguy, I bought my 45 ACP cylinder from Peacemaker Specialist and fit it myself. It just required a little bit of careful stoning on the barrel end of the bushing and it went right in. This cylinder works in 4 of my Colts 2 just right and the other 2 have a .006" barrel cylinder gap.
