Colt service?

Had 5 straight double feeds at the end of my shooting session with my new Colt Commander today. Figured I just needed to retension the extractor but upon viewing the extractor it turns out the hook had snapped off. I have had no dealing with Colt service in a long while, have they improved (it would not take much)? Will they just send me the part I need? This pistol is box stock and has approx 600 rounds though it.

They'll want it back, usually, but ask anyway for the part.

They still sucked as of around 2 years ago.

I have a Python that I'm eventually sending to Cylinder & Slide b/c I don't want to waste the O/N shipping charges to get a gun that looks and works worse than when I sent it in.

OTOH, Colt is, allegedly, improving things since the past couple years.

BTW, Wilson has what seem to be very good extractors, but they are series 70 only for SS guns. I converted my GC to series 70 and chucked the FP safety, so this works for me. I'd consider spending the ~$24 for a better part.

A call to Colt revealed instructions that I should FAX them a copy of the receipt along with an explanation of my problem and they would happily send me a new extractor. We shall see. I may go ahead with an aftermarket part but it is the principle in that I should receive a replacement part from them.

If you have read the 1911 forums lately, the general consensus that I get is that Colt has improved both their quality and customer service somewhat. Their marketing of their guns, however, is truely a crime. Colt could sell double what they are doing if they just paid some attention to their web site. Absolutely criminal.

Broken extractors seems to be a problem lately with new Colts. Is your gun blued or stainless?

'01 GSR, did you actually send something to Colt in the last two years?
I sent my Delta Elite, because of some premature wear to the interior of the slide. They replaced the slide (which fits better than the original) at no charge. Turnaround time was slow - they said I'd have it back in 30 days, and it took 33.

Python - sent it back 4 times. Last was almost 2 years ago.

The one I liked best was when I asked for the B/C gap to be tightened from .008" and I get it back w/ barrel ~ 15 degrees off center. Oh, and a rear sight that is no longer adjustable.

It was free (less shipping), though.

If I get enough positives on how they've changed in the last 2 years, I might try again.

Colt extractors are garbage. Even if they send you a new one, you would be better off if you went with a high quality aftermarket part, like Cylinder and Slide or Wilson.
