Colt SAA question

I am in the process of deciding what to purchase in a SA revolver. I have considered a Ruger Vaquero, but as cost is not much of an option, there are a couple modern Colt SAA 45s in the area, new (New Old Stock? New In Box?) that I have considered. Is a newer model Colt SAA too valuable to really carry? This would be a carry gun, 2 to 3 times a week. It would certainly get nicks and scuffs associated with carry.

Is it considered in poor taste to carry and thereby put wear and tear on a Colt SAA?

Hey _Hawkeye_,,,
It's your money and your gun,,,
I would expect you should do anything you want with it. :)

There will certainly be some aficionados,,,
Who will say it would be a crying shame to carry it,,,
But I feel that unless you have bought it as an investment property,,,
Carry it, shoot it, do whatever you want to with it as long as it's a legit thing to do.

I can understand not abusing a gun,,,
I can't understand not using a gun.

But that's just me. ;)

You said:

Just out of pure curiosity,,,
For what purpose would you be carrying it?

It's a 3rd Generation Colt. They still make them. They aren't scarce. If it fell out of your holster and into the Ocean, you could replace it with a brand new one.

I see no reason not to carry it, use it, put wear and tear on it.

If it were a pristine 1st Generation or 2nd Generation Colt, I might think long and hard about putting any more wear on it but not a new (or newish) one.

No, there is no reason not to carry a 3rd generation Colt SA revolver...

a lot of guys carry 1911's - that have replacement costs up around $3,000 from Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, Ed Brown, etc....

The downside to carrying a Single Action revolver...is weight...and overall length / grip style...its a fairly large sized gun / depending on what barrel length you buy - but even with a 4 3/4" barrel the overall length is 10.25" ...and compared to a 5" barreled 1911 at 8.7" ....that's quite a bit longer...

not that it can't be done / just depends on what you want to do.

I have scabbard type holsters for my Freedom Arms single action 4 3/4" ...but nothing I could ever conceal it with / but its so heavy, I'd need to wear some serious suspenders...even if I did have an IWB holster for it....

Yeah, I hate when my sidearm makes my trousers do the "ankle-ride"...
To the OP, if you can swing it, shoot it too! Take care with it obviously, but it was made to shoot and enjoy. Would that they made "3rd Generation" Pythons a guy could afford to actually pack and shoot!

CCW with a SAA size revolver isn't hard at all with a good quality holster and sturdy belt.

Believe it or not , I can conceal a 4 5/8" 45 Colt Blackhawk IWB with just a T shirt to cover it. Not that hard really.

I own three Third Gen Model Ps, each has been thoroughly gone over by Peacemaker Specialists, including re-finishing.
None could be replaced today for less than $3000.

I don't say that to brag, but to mention that all three are shooters & ended up in expensive configurations because the work was necessary to get them to where I wanted them to be.

The money wasn't spent for show, it was spent for go, and no, they are not too expensive to shoot. Not for me, anyhow. :)
As far as I'm concerned, worn & torn is the way a Peacemaker's SUPPOSED to look.

I've had two of'm for over 12 years. I used to carry'm off duty but am now retired and still carry one on occasion. I've won matches using them so don't believe I'm out gunned while carrying a SAA. I've been in 6 shootings and have never fired more than 4 rounds in any of'm. Oddly enough the Gang Members on the south side of San Antonio were scared to death of my Colt's especially when I told them they were .45s. BTW, I'm 6'8" and about 330 so don't have a problem carrying a big gun concealed.
