Colt Python

Hi everyone,

I have a question to Colt Python owners.
Which way does the cylinder rotates, and why?
thanks in advance,

Max

As far as I know all Colt revolvers go clockwise, with a cylinder release you pull, not push. Opposite of S&W, and all others I am aware of. Of course they still open to the left side of the gun.

I hope I won't say stupid things. So, on colt revolers, the hand /which moves the cylinder/ is on the left side of the trigger, right?

Yup, the hand is on the left side. So the theory goes the hand being on the left forces the crane into the frame and thus (supposedly) does not require a front lockup on the crane. Another revolver that rotates clockwise with the hand on the left is the Dan Wesson. Being the hand is on the left side then it is far easier to have the cylinder to rotate clockwise.

The hand only extends as the trigger goes to the rear. With the trigger fully forward and the hammer at rest just pull the cylinder release to the rear and swing the cylinder out.

Some, if not all, Colts, prior to about 1900, were counter clockwise. Supposedly the clockwise direction was used to assist in final lock-up,

John
