I have a friend who has a 357 Colt python 6 " royal blue with low serial #'s 170_. Is this a real collectable python? I was told several years ago it was a collectors item.. I 'am trying to establish a true value for him. Any help will be appreciated.

A serial of 170X would have been made in 1957, the third year of production.

This people will pay more for these early Pythons, but I wouldn't describe it as a "collector's gun".

Value depends on actual condition, whether the gun is in original shape including the early First Type fully checkered grips, and whether the original box and papers are with it.

thanks

It has been fired 5 times,,, is in excellent condition and has the original box although there are not any papers with it.. What is it worth?

I have seen astronomical asking prices on early Pythons but I don't know if they actually sell at those prices. A big plus would be if it has the early style stocks that are checkered over the entire surface rather than just panels of checkering. If I had a 1957 Python in 98% condition I would ask $2,000 for it and see what happens. It very well may set unsold. But I would try. I think it might move at $1,500. Definitely would sell at $1,200.

I once saw a 8" .38 Special only model, nickel or stainless, wood grips, near mint condition for sale for $450. Man I regret not getting it.
I liked my Anaconda, prefer the pull-backward motion of the cylinder release.
Python is the king of .357's (definately of 6 shot da's)
