Colt Python 357 question

My dad recently gave me a Colt Python 357. I know he has had it a while, but I don't know how long. Can anyone tell me the manufacture date according to this serial number: V26685.

Also, what is this gun worth? It is in mint condition and has the original box and papers that came with it.

Made about 1979.

Value ~$1000 if it is in new in box condition. If you want to sell it you may have to wait a bit to find a buyer willing to pay this, there are many Pythons around in 95-98% condition that go for about $600-800, and older Pythons are often preferred by collectors.

Do NOT part with it. Take it to the grave with you or will it to some responsible person in your family. I repeat, do NOT part with it.

Over the course of your lifetime, a $1000 isn't all that much. They don't make 1979 PYTHON's anymore.

Sell your car, have your spouse take a 2nd job, you take a 3rd job. Don't sell it.

The PYTHON is to be held in reference, shot with appropriate ammunition, and coddeled afterwards.

It is the PREMIER revolver.

Don't part with it. You will regret it.

Thank you BFoster and Fraser for the info. I hadn't planned on selling it though, I was just curious. By the way is there something about the 79 Python's that make them better than say the ones sold later? I am not too knowledgable about revolvers I mainly collect rifles and semi-auto handguns. Thanks again for the info.

darink, the Pythons made in the seventies and early eighties were supposedly better than the later production models. And the ones made earlier are generally considered to be even better.

As far as prices go, I paid $890 for a new in box, unfired 6" nickel model. Some on this board say the nickel guns aren't worth as much as blued, but that's not what I've seen on the online gun auctions. I sold another 6"nickel model that was in mint condition, but fired, for $780.

Just another perspective.
