Colt site in the internet classify their Pistol into:
- performance products
- personal protection

I am just curious if the personal protection pistol category like the M1991 A1 and Colt Defender can be used for target shooting without changing it's out of the box parts or to further customizing it.

I have bought one of their M1991 A1 and I would like it to be my self defense gun and at the same time planned it to use in the range for local competition. Could this kind of gun can be used also as competition gun.

Any comments, thanks.

The simple answer to your questions is "yes". Practice until you know where a given load will go. With fixed sites its all about kentucky windage and elevation, unless you happen to find a load that prints to your point of aim. If you really want to shoot competition, you'll eventully have to get something more along the lines of a comp gun.

The above replies are correct, but the fact is that target guns are quite simply made to closer tolerances and fit than standard guns, and have better sights and trigger pulls.

You can certainly use the 1991A1 on the target range, and perhaps not do too badly. But you will get your clock cleaned by the shooters with Gold Cups and the like, because they have both more experience and more accurate guns.

A few sessions and I'll bet you will decide to spring for a target pistol.

BADS..., Rock..., & Jim, thank you so much for your answers and advice. So, I still need to purchase one of those competition product lines and the like to be at par with real shooters. Or I will start customizing now this 1991A1.
