Colt Officers Ser 80 MK IV for $410 ?

Local pawn shop has a blued, Colt Officers Ser 80 MK IV, 3-dot sights, one mag, walnut grips gold colt medalion; with cheap holster and 83 rds ammo for $559. I got 'em down to $410, they will hold it until Monday.

Looks box stock. Slide is nice and tight, some worn finish from the holster. Trigger ok, a tiny bit of creep but not excessive. Looks like it was carried a lot and not shot much - maybe only the missing 17 rds from one box of ammo.

Looking at this as a starting point for a future CC piece after a some trigger/reliablity/dehorning work.

Is this a fair deal ?

Agreed, a great deal. I'll through this in just for shucks and grins. Last weekend I sold one at a show for a friend.
1911, MKIV, Series 80, .45 ACP. Nickle, wrap around neoprene grips, magazine bumper, tuned Wilson trigger and Millet sights. NIB and unfired other than testing. Price $600. Beautiful piece but I didn't have six hundred bucks. :(

Here's my two cents....

Some years back, I bought a slightly used OM, similiar to yours. I've owned and operated GMs for 30 years w/o a glitch, and figured this would be a better carry than my full size pet. Wrong!!

The thing had trouble feeding hardball, and the mainspring housing broke, twice. So did the bushing plug. Back to a good smith it went, and after much sweat, it would feed hardball, but not SWCs, Silvertips, CCIs and so on.

Also, with any round, the fireball was downright impressive in low light, and response in a low light scenario would have been one aimed shot.

The trigger was egregious, and some expensive work improved it to mediocre. Swapping springs neither helped nor hindered the problem. This was the first of maybe 7 or 8 GM types of various manufacture that wasn't 100% reliable, and it got sold back to the shop I bought it at forthwith. My smith stated that others were having the same problems,so I doubt I was at fault.

Meanwhile, my pet GM will feednchamber a sized, empty case, and in several thousand rounds, hasn't hiccuped yet.IMO, get the full size GM and count your blessings....

thanks for the responses !

Dave - thanks for the reality check.

I know that Colt had manufacturing/reliability problems in the 80s and early 90's (?) when they were in receivership. The factory 3-dot sights make this piece post 1995 i think, so I can only hope. I consider this one as a starting point.

Your points regarding a full size GM are well-taken. Muzzle flash is a concern, but the mostly likely low-light situation for me would be at home, not while carrying, and i have much better solutions at hand for those scenarios. It certainly would be a consideration in selecting a carry load.

A full size GM is just *not* a summer carry option in Florida - i wear shorts and T-shirt to work most days.

If that is a matte blue gun $400 is a really good price, if it is polished blue gun it is an excellent price. That is what I hope to see the 1991A1 guns go for when they return to the market.

It's a matte blue.

I did the deal, will pick it up next week (due to waiting period yada yada) and post range results after i wring it out a little.

Thanks for the encouraging words.
