Colt New Service Grips

I recently purchased a 1916 Canadian proofed Colt New Service. The gun is mechanically very tight and shows honest wear, not abuse.

However, the grips are aftermarket and just don't look so nice. Any thoughts on sources for replacements? I continue to check gunbroker and auctionarms (and sometimes eBay), but have made little headway.

Brownells and Dixie Gunworks both sell reproduction epoxy material grips that look like the hard rubber originals but there much more durable. I have a set of these on one of my Colts and they look good. Check them out to see if they have this model in stock.

I bought a set of replacements for mine that look like the old hard rubber style. I think these are offered on AuctionArms for around $20. Original checkered walnut grips turn up once in a great while but I can't bring myself to pay more than I paid for the gun to own a set.

I know...

LOL. I know what you mean. I saw some of the prices at other sights and got sticker shock.

Anyone familiar with the North Carolina Ordance "Royalwood" grips?

I'd prefer wood, but repro "hard rubber" is better then the material on there now.

GunsnRovers,

Have you got a link for North Caroline Ord(n?)ance? I can't find a web presence for this firm. I have a few hard rubber stocked New Service revolvers I'd be delighted to fit with wooden stocks (of course retaining the factory stocks). And a few Police Positives too...

Meanwhile, here is a bit of wooden stocked New Service eye candy:

Thanks GunsnRovers,

I may try a set on my New Service in 455 Eley. Originals are indeed getting hard to come by.

Tom B,

I don't really dismiss Gun Parts/Numrich as a source. The trouble with them is that you're never sure just what will arrive. That said, I have, on occasion, been pleasantly surprised.

gunparts

I've had hit and miss experience with gunparts as well. Currently, their online site says they are out of grips anyway.

Mostly I'm curious about the "Royalwood" grips I found at NCO. They are a synthetic material from what I read on the site, that "looks, feels, and stains like real wood". While it sounds interesting, I've never heard of them and am skeptical.

Old Colt Grips

Fitz Grips was the premier supplier of aftermarket grips from 1924 til I retired in 1979. I do have a supply of walnut and cherry wood grips for old Colts with the Colt Viper and Diamondback frames that had different names. I have a line drawing available and for a possible customer I ask that they make a drawing on stiff paper to match the bare grip frame including the bolt and other holes and send it to me to fit to one of my old grips. It has worked quite well and I have about two dozen grips left. My wood grips replaced bakelite and other broken ones. Thanks Paul
