Colt Mustang? Pony? Pocketlite?

Hi, all,

Could someone help me settle another bit of confusion?

I've read some of the threads on mouse guns, and there were some positive comments on Colt Mustang Pocketlite. So I went to gunsamerica.

No such thing being advertised. Which of course doesn't prove it doesn't exist.

So I searched here for Pocketlite. Came up with some Colt Pony Pocketlites.

Went back here and searched for Colt Pony. Got some threads that said they were lousy!

So, could someone disentangle the nomenclature of Mustangs, Ponys, and Pocketlites for me?

Thanx,

The Mustang is a single action, based on the old Govt. Model .380. The Pony is a DAO, and Colt lost a lawsuit to Kahr for copying their offset barrel lug. Both come in standard steel frame and lightweight "Pocketlite" alloy frame models.

I've never fired a Pony, but I've heard they need work to get up to snuff. The Mustang is a nice piece, especially the Pocketlite.

I have the Colt Mustang Pocketlite, and an SS Colt Mustang. The Pocketlite is a great little carry gun, rides very nicely in my pocket holster. I've never shot the Pony, thought the one sample I handled in a gunshop did have a really bad trigger!

The Colt Mustang is a small, single action pistol. It is very similar to the 1911 in the way it operates, and looks like a 1911 that your wife shrunk because she put it in the dryer at too high of heat :)

The Colt Mustang Pocket Lite is the same gun with an alloy frame.

The Colt Pony is, I believe, a hammerless DA only that is similar is size and appearance to the Mustang.

You won't find any of them new - Colt stopped production in the middle of their financial woes. They are available used, but will command a price that is equal to, or higher, than what you could by a new one for in the mid 90's.

If you're interested in a small backup gun, I believe my MK9 will be in today. Give me a call or email me, and maybe we can get together this weekend.

I've had my Colt Pony Pocketlite for a few years. I like it very much. It has a moderately heavy trigger pull (some stacking), but it's very smooooth. I only shoot it 10 yards and less and find that the sights are well regulated (at least for Cor-Bon .380 ACP ammo).
This gun has never experienced a FTF or FTE. BTW, the Pony is not hammerless, but is spurless. Very nice little pocket gun that I would recommend.

Colts were competitive pocket guns until the Kel Tec P-32, their P-11, NAA Guardian in 32 and 380 ACP, and the Kahr MK9 started taking off.

They're okay but for the size and power, you can find a lighter, more compact model.

After all, these are get the heck off of me guns.

A Colt Mustang Pocketlite was the first pistol I purchased after I obtained my CCW.

My gunstore had both Pony and Mustang Pocketlites for $379.95. I chose the Mustang. I still have it. It even has the original plastic guide rod. The only thing I've ever changed is the recoil spring. I put in a one piece, Wolff. (One pound heavier.) It's a great summer gun. I carry it in a M/D Enterprises "BS-2". Hides well under just a T-shirt. The last NIB Mustang Pocketlite that I saw at a gun show had a price tag that said $650.00!! I shoot Hydra-Shok PD's from it because I'm hoping that the reduced recoil will make it last longer. I've been pretty lucky regarding autos. My Mustang is another one that has never malfunctioned. One thing though. The front sight is just awful. In the slightly dark condition of the indoor range I frequent, I simply can't see the front sight.
Like JohnWill, I'm thinking of sending it to SM&A for the "Carry Package".

There are smaller & lighter packages, that is true. (Still, I wouldn't think that comparing the .380ACP Mustang to a .32ACP is completely fair! :) )

The little Mustang does offer the option for cocked & locked carry though, which none of the other DAO pistols do. If carried in a small belt holster (OWB or IWB), it would be just as fast to being into action as a DAO.

For pocket carry, I load the chamber, lower the hammer, & activate the safety - which, unlike a 1911, you can do with the hammer down. I then slide it into a simple Uncle Mikes pocket holster & away I go. I would admit though, that having to swipe off the safety & pull the hammer after seperating the gun from the pocket holster would involve more time than with the DAO gun, but does offer the lighter SA pull once it's there.

So...LTBD, I guess!

That is absolutely ridiculous, the seller had to be on something. I've seen them in the mid to high $300s, & while it does seem to be the going price I still thought it was a mite greedy.

I'd run from whoever tries to sell a Mustang - assuming it was not an SM&A job or something - for that kind of jingle. He/she is not to be trusted!

The Colt Mustang Pocketlite that I have, was shot 200 times before I would carry it. I could not make it miss a round, Golden!
I tried, and I tried, but that little Colt would not stub it toe.
Fun gun, I dont carry it that often, but I enjoy it and hides good
when you cant take the biger pistol.

I bought a Pony Pocketlite NIB back in `97. I carried it often, in a pants pocket holster of my design that held the extra loaded mag also. It never failed in any way. The gun has a rough trigger, but with some gentle stoning, and a lot of shooting, it got better. I did replace the plactic guide rod, and all the springs. I shot only Federal HydroShock HP in it. Accurate enough out to 15 yards to do double taps into three inches.

I finally traded it even for a slightly used .40 Browning HP. Every time there was even a hint that a hand gun might be needed, I always had thoughts of being undergunned. I know that the .380 HydroShock is a good round, and the gun was accurate enough, but I just never had confidence in the .380, even though I carry a .38 Taurus 85CH often, and feel fine with it.

The gun was well made, reliable and accurate, but I am stunned at the prices they command now.

Bought a NIB DAO Pony Pocketlite from internet dealer about three months ago for $431. They are available at decent prices, but are going up everyday. Mine has never hiccupped and works great for CCW as it disappears in the pocket.
