Colt mustang .380

This pistol was my mothers purse gun back in the 90's! It's never been the smoothest action or trigger but overall very reliable! I'm thinking about carrying to a smith and having it slicked up a bit! Any opinions on what all I should have done? I'm n louisiana if anybody knows a great smith here!

If it's reliable, I would do as little as possible to it. Remember, a tiny pistol like a Mustang isn't going to win any bullseye competitions, regardless of what you do to it. It's intended for close quarters self defense, and for that reliability trumps just about everything.

My view is, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Can you be more specific regarding what you find objectionable about the trigger?

I’ve heard stories of people who “upgraded” their Mustang by replacing the stock plastic guide rod with a metal guide rod only to experience damage to their guns. Admittedly I have no firsthand knowledge related to this issue, but maybe someone with more expertise can comment.

I've cleaned the gun several times just getting more familiar with it but it still feels a Lil gritty! I think some Emory cloth rubbed in the right places is all it needs

Barry Lee- I worked for the outfit that made the guide-rods, and I never saw anything like that. That was quite the hot seller back in the 90's.

Ok, as I said no first hand experience. I considered buying one and I ran across several cautionary tales about them. May have been just baseless internet rumors, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I put a Wolff steel guide rod in my Mustang and never experienced a problem. Back then, the idea of a polymer guide rod seemed sacrilegious but not so much these days.

I did the same ten years ago when I bought a Pony (the double action sibling of the Mustang). If I were to buy a Mustang today, I would also replace that guide rod with steel. I just don't trust plastic.

Plastic rod in one of my Mustang just 'broke' ... Piece chipped off the large end of it. A steel replacement is on order.

By all means go for the steel rod, the original Star DK the mustang and Sig 238 were cloned off of uses steel as does the Sig. Sometimes Colt bean counters should take the day off when making decisions...a plastic mainspring housing on a 1911 ? Go figure !
