Colt MKIV Series 80 question...

Every time I see a thread about how much is a brand X whatchmacallit worth I wonder if the guy has heard of the Blue Book or Gunlist. Well now I am in just such a position. A dealer buddy of mine has a stainless steel Govt. series 80 for $500.00 and it is in great shape. It has a beavertail grip safety and commander hammer. The price seems a bit high by the book, but about right or even low in comparison with Gun List and Shotgun news. Colt already got their money so getting mad at them is no reason not to buy it.

I am looking for another 1911 style pistol to fool around with. In all honesty, should I get the Colt and add parts as I go or should I forget it and buy a Govt. Springfield already "loaded"?

If you don't have a problem with the passive firing pin safety, go for it. Otherwise, get a ParaOrdnance or a Springfield.

I have a series 80 and can't wear it out. Colt is not stupid and knew what they were doing with this gun. I expect few problems and shoot if and reload for it. I also carry it and I don't take that choice lightly.
I am surprised at how well made it is and void of tooling marks etc. Colt and others seem to have "vintages" with their guns as far as workmanship goes. S&W is legend for that problem.
I will bring tears to your eyes. A student needed fast cash several months ago and I got the gun, 5 boxes of ammo, nice holster, spare parts, 5 extra Chip M mags night sights (I don't use em) and a few other goodies. $350.
There is a GOD!!!!

I think it's a good deal. Haven't had any trouble with mine!

Sounds like a good deal to me.

Given the current status of Colt (or non-status as it were) the series 80 will probably appreciate in value, if resale is a concern.

Just make sure the serial number isn't
SS22826E. Mine was better made than the Gold Cup I traded it for, but the GC works. My GM worked before a "gunsmith" chopped out the feed ramp so that "it can feed empties." Fed empties fine, but little else.

It's an enhanced model. Got the dealer down to $450.00 and he threw in a box of ammo. I'll try it out tommorow if I get the chance.
