Colt Match Target AR-15

Just bought, well put on lay away, a Colt AR-15 flat top match target rifle. The barrel is a 16.1 inch with a 1 in 9 twist. I plan to use the rifle for matches and punching paper out to 200 yds. Does anyone have this model? What scope do you use, I'm looking for an ACOG type. What type of ammo have you had the best luck with? Bullet weight? Any other little goodies you can think of to make this rifle fun??? My only 223 experience is an M-16. I have no idea what can be done to this model. It has a heavy barrell and match trigger and bolt carrier. I'm sure there are a thousand other mods I could do. What else is practical for my shooting interests. Thanks in advance for any info.

I have this model (as well as a few others). It is an excellent gun - more accurate than I am. Currently, I have mine set up with a 4x32 ACOG and a Smith Enterprises muzzle brake (latter is effective but loud). I also have an after-market grip that positions my trigger finger better than the original.

It will shoot anything - I mainly use 55 g FMJs - but I have also had good luck with Black Hills 62 g moly coated if I want tighter groups.

I have a Colt match target as well. I can't say that I see a need for a muzzle brake on an AR15 -- they have very little recoil as it is. I'd spend your money on a two-stage trigger instead. There are several companies which make triggers for AR15s. I've got the Armalite trigger, which I like. I hear the Jewell trigger is nice as well.

Don't have a scope on mine.

Your rifle will do just fine with 55gr, but it will also stabilize the 62gr SS109. If you want to get the most accuracy from factory ammo, get Federal Gold Match 69gr. Not cheap, though. About $16-18 per 20. For longer range shooting (at the 600 yard line), most service rifle shooters are going to very heavy bullets (e.g., 80 gr), but your barrel won't stabilize them and the are too long for the mag well (have to be loaded one at a time through the ejection port).
