COASTER

Hi Folks

Just happened to swing by the local gun shop and saw a Colt King Cobra for $399.

My question is -- do any of you folks know what kind of a revolver this is?

I mean cost/accuracy/age/dependability?

Personally this was a first for me so I thought I'd ask

Thanks folks !!

I personally would jump on it. You seldom see KCs for less than $500 now. It was the latest all purpose .357mag medium frame revolver from Colt. It is quite strong and generally very accurate. It is also durable as it has the newer Colt action, but that means it also doesn't have the butter trigger of the older Colts. If you like it you will be well rewarded.

no diamondback

colt has had 2 traditions with double-action revolvers..the grand old guns of python (357) and diamondback (38)...and the newer design of the trooper carried over to the item you have. The python and diamondback are legendary...in good condition the sliver/butter smoothness of the action may surprise you..in poor shape they are hard and dull...and it takes a really competent pistolsmith to deal with them properly...your gun and the trooper-style line was Colt's attempt to match Ruger and S&W with good quality guns that were cheaper to produce...your gun will be fine...and any competent gunsmith can work it a bit if you have a problem...but it ain't no diamondback.

Trespass: You need to back up the number of years for Colt DA traditions. The Double Action didn't start with the 1955 Python or the 1966 Diamondback. They are pretty, well made and so forth, and some of my personal favorites in the Colt lineup. Check out the Police Positive line that continued into the late 1990's and others. Now there is a tradition. Anyway, the King Cobra is a fine handgun.

One of the biggest regrets I have is that I sold a King Cobra. I had the 4" stainless model, bought it new in the box, and let it go for some reason. Probably because I was young and stupid. Snatch that bad boy up, if its in good shape.

The first handgun I ever bought (actually my dad had to buy it for me because I was 16) was a 6" stainless KC. I wish I would have had enough to get a 4" too, or maybe instead, but I was young and poor. I have guns that I like a lot better, but I will never sell my King Cobra. I shot about 50 rounds through it right after I bought it, but then found out it was discontinued and never shot it again. It is in a padded case, with dessicant to keep it safe, and will be a great first gun for my son/nephew/someone I can pass it on to some day. I would buy that gun in a heartbeat!

The Trooper predates both the Python and the Diamondback. In fact the Python is just a refined Trooper. Now the Trooper MkIII has the newer more cost efficent designed action.

I recently got a King Cobra in a trade with a friend, and I'm completely happy. Kuhnhausen refers to this model as the strongest of the mid-sized .357s, IIRC. I find mine to be accurate and pleasant to shoot with a wide variety of loads (including the hot stuff from Buffalo Bore), yet svelte enough that I can use an old Bianchi K-frame crossdraw holster to carry it.

I think $399 is a good price for a good condition used King Cobra. Blued or stainless?
