I was reading an old magazine article that said colt firearms donated money to charles schumer's campain in 1998.Is this really true? The article was in fur-fish-game.

This is only somewhat surprising. Remember the Bush semi-auto import ban. Many of us were very suspicious that this was done at the behest of Colt and other domestic AR15 manufacturers, but most likely Colt.

Yes, the CEO of Colt at that time did donate to Schumer's campaign. I was reminded of that outrage when I was reading Colt's company history on their website and saw the CEO's name.
He almost makes Ed Schultz look like Charlton Heston.

Colt the company cannot donate. The owner of Colt, Don Zilkha, did. It was before 1998 as well. We still have the AR15 as a result. Only domestically produced rifles may have one evil feature, remember that imports are not allowed any and ATF has ruled a thumbhole stock does not qualify as a non-pistol grip on an AR. So if the same domestic production had the same restrictions applied to it as imports there would be no AR-15 type rifles produced today, there would be no 'post-ban' because they couldn't qualify (unless McMillan produced the stock that I worked up with Gale and Rock at the SHOT Show last January).

Jeff OTMG,

I'm a little confused on the timeline here. When did the Bush important ban begin? As I recall it the Bush ban was an executive order(?), or did Bush actually sign legislation that kept out foreign semi-autos that were considered non-sporting. At least in the very short run was that this act pushed up the price of foreign competitors to the AR15.

Bush executive order was 1989 for named firearms. That gave us the beginning of 'butthole' stocks. The 4 'evil features' test for a QUALIFYING firearm was the 1994 Brady Bill. Imports were allowed no evil features, domestic production was allowed one since, at the time, you couldn't build an AR without a pistol grip if it was to remain a semiauto with a detachable magazine.

Well, we can nitpick all day long over the "scraps" of import bans vs. domestic bans minutia, but there's no need for that. It's pretty simple: You give money to Chuck Schumer and Bill Clinton, you get boycotted. That's all there is to it. I can't think of any reason good enough to justify funding the ringleaders of the victim disarmament movement. Whether it's the company or the company's president giving for business reasons, the result is the same. Colt appears to be barely better than Ruger.

BTW, Jeff OTMG, what was your stock design?

Futo, since ATF won't allow a thumbhole on an AR as a qualification to do away with the pistolgrip it would have to be a stock without a pistol grip or thumbhole. Think of an Anshutz sytle rifle stock that has a 'wall' to prevent the thumb from going completely through or around it.

denfoote, bingo ;)
