Colt Firearms sells a Colt Historical Letter for about $100.00.

Colt will research your gun, and issue you a museum quality letter stating everything they know about the gun.

This would include:
The date shipped.
WHO it was shipped to.
How it was set up when it left the factory, including original barrel length, caliber, finish, type of grips, and any special options.

Other than this, there's no way of knowing who might have been the original owner.

See the Historical Letter section on the Colt web site:
http://www.coltsmfg.com

Due to the high value of pre-1900 Colt single actions, this is money well spent.
