I purchased a Colt DS-II, .38 special (model SD1040) with a 4 inch barrel a few years ago. My dealer had gotten in about 20 of them. They all looked new and appeared unfired, but the ends of the blue Colt plastic boxes were stamped USED in red letters. The dealer said they had been displays. My questions, is the 4 inch barrel common in the DS-II? What would be the reason for a large quanity of seeming new pistols marked used?

Dfariswheel knows a whole lot about Colts, so you could probably PM him with these questions. As for what I know, I don't think the four-inch DS-IIs were common at all. The Police Positive Special on the D frame had been reintroduced and then discontinued again around the time the SF-VI was introduced. The DS-II replaced the SF-VI. Perhaps they had some four-inch barrels left over from the Police Positive Special run and used them up?

The 4" DS-II is not common at all.
When Colt discontinued all the older "D" framed Colt's like the Detective Special and Police Positive Special, the replacement was the Colt "SF" stainless steel frame.
They intended to use it as the basis for a whole series of small framed revolvers, just like the "D" frame was.
The "Detective Special" version was the 2" SF-VI, the DS-II and the Magnum Carry.
Colt made the DS-II and the Magnum Carry with the 2" barrel, and a very few in the 3" barrel.
Even more rare, were a short run of DS-II's in 4".
Probably to save money Colt just marked these as DS-II's instead of making up a new roll stamp with something like Police Positive II or something similar.
I don't know how many 4" DS-II's were made but the DS-II was only made from 1997 to 1999-2000.
The 4" version was apparently ONE short run.
