Colt DS finish questions

I've got a Colt DS that I'd like to send to Colt for work. For starters, I'd like the horse icon worked on to stand out. Also, I'd like the gun checked as the last time I used it, I got sprayed in the face with fragments or something when I fired. I'd probably want the hammer hard chromed and the gun blued - does anyone have pics to show the difference between royal blue and standard blue? Not sure what all this would cost but I do love the gun. Thanks.

First, better contact Colt and see if they still work on their older guns and will do what you want. Colt never used hard chrome on anything and I suspect would not be able to handle that detail.

As to the difference between standard and Royal Blue, it is mostly a matter of polishing. The Colt standard blue varied over time from a hard black to a soft blue to a brush blue, so the finish on yours would depend on when it was made. Royal Blue is a deep, rich blue, almost the kind you can "see into". Again, I don't know if Colt will or can still do that work.

They will reblue for 325 I believe plus shipping.
Probably a 3 - 4 month turnaround.
Standard blue, royal blue or bright nickel.

Good news! IIRC, there was a period when they would do little or no work on older guns, so I was not sure what they would do now. It is good to know that they will refinish, and with those options.

Thanks for the info. I'll contact them and see what they say about working on the mechanics of the gun. I imagine if they answer no, they'll I'll have to consider another smith - maybe Cylinder and Slide. Thank you.

Laura, the fragment spray is probably the result of bad timing. I would take care of that before the refinish, because otherwise you would just have a pretty paperweight.

Hi,

What is "bad timing" exactly? I am going to ask that they check out the guns internals prior to the finishing. The trigger is really wonderful but that first shot got my attention and not in a good way. Appreciate all the feedback people. Thank you.

Bad timing is when the cylinder doesn't lock up perfectly in line with the barrel bore, causing misalignment. This is a serious issue that should be corrected before shooting it again. It is extremely dangerous.

"Timing" of a revolver is how the cylinder rotates and lines up with the barrel.
"Bad timing" or "out of time" means it doesn't align just right and shaves off little bits of the bullet which spit out to the side and rear.

It is also possible for it to spit blazing granules of gunpowder enough to notice and there be nothing mechanical wrong with it.
But since you plan to send it in anyhow, no reason not to ask them to check the operation and repair if necessary.

Spitting like that is NOT normal for a gun like yours. Colt will be able to fix it. Generally they can be relied upon to supply most any custom touches you wish BUT at a price. I'm not sure about refreshing the rampant colt but would bet they can. Royal Blue differs mostly in the surface preparation(very very highly polished). It is probably the most beautiful blue you'll ever see. It's also expensive.
