I was shooting my friends Colt rail gun yesterday and this .45 acp shot and felt very clos e to my ed brown 9mm . Shot very accurately and had very little recoil He told me (once I wa s done )that colt custom did recoil system work on it

started me thinking -- I want a colt gold cup trophy and I was wondering what I can do to make that gun shoot like his--without expensive gunsmith work.?

Things like a full recoil guide rod? special recoil springs? any ideas?

I am not expert on gun modifications thus I do no t usually modify my guns but he really lit a fire in me on this one

thanks

Rob

I am going to guess its a combo of factors that made the 45ACP rail gun feel like a 9mm.

1. An extra ounce of steel out front for the rail.
2. perhaps a different rate spring might make the recoil impulse feel different.
3. Was he shooting light loaded handloads?

Not sure about the commercial version of the Rail Gun, but the version Colt sells to the Marines has a dual recoil spring assembly similar to what's used in the Defender (and many other makes of 3" 1911s).

You should find out if your friend is shooting lighter match hand loads, if he is, ask him to front you a couple hundred rounds to play with. It would be worth a call to Wolff Gunsprings Technical Support at 800-545-0077 to figure out a few variable rate recoil springs at different weights to try, these would be cheap enough to experiment with. If you're shooting factory loads I wouldn't go much lower than a 13-14 lb. variable rate spring for a .45, but that's me!

I am guessing you are on to something with the recoil spring...perhaps a heavier weight?

no the loads were 230 gr fmj winchester white box

the answer from colt was----dual recoil spring system--which we cannot just uy from them yet. Have to wait until later this year

wolff springs suggests a single 16# spring and a 330 OD recoil rod for the same results. The cost will be minimal. I might try both. Need to save to buy the gun first--LOL

thanks for the replies
