I've had this for several years. Is it a 2nd Generation? I'm looking to sell it here on the forum after I hear a few comments, thank you!!!

Cheap imitation of a Colt. Little Pony is facing the wrong way on the stamp, dead giveaway. Be lucky to get $25 for it with the box. I'll give ya $30 just cause I feel gracious today.;);):D:D

Just kidding of course. I know someone will let you know what you have. I started shooting BP just a few years ago as a change from the other stuff, and have gotten hooked. I just shoot the cheaper repros, but will certainly watch your's go for sale when it does.

Beautiful Set!!!!!!

It is a 2nd Generation 3rd Model Dragoon that someone has put a pair of Colt SAA medalion grips on. It originally came with one piece walnut grips. It could be either a C series or F series Dragoon depending on SN. The C series guns were made between 1974 and 1978 and had serial numbers between 20801 and 25000. The F series dragoons were made between 1980 and 1982 and had serial numbers between 25100 and 34500

It is housed in a late 2nd Generation Dragoon presentation case with 2nd Generation accessories.

Unfired NIB 3rd Model Dragoons are worth in the neighborhood of $750. If they have been fired, played with and don't having the original packaging, their value can drop by half or more. If the grips are real ivory, the value can increase.

Late 2nd Gen cases are worth between $100 and $175 depending on condition. Original packaging can increase the value.

2nd/3rd Model Dragoon Accessory sets are worth between $200 and $400; again, depending on condition. Original packaging can increase the value.

With all that said; and, the economy being what it is, it may be difficult to get top price for this cased set.

Serial number is 217xx.

The bottom of the grips...you can see ridges where it appears to me are the layers you'd expect in Ivory. Plus the grain on the grips is deep. And the color has that ivory, yellow, orange overtones to it like ivory. Definitely bone or ivory grips, not plastic!

Never been fired.

So it's a C series.

Y'know, that's one of those guns that I would soooo want to hang on to, but then I'd soooo want to shoot it that there's no way that I could keep it. On the other hand, what a cool terrible situation to be in!

It looked like a C series. Blueing was more polished & deeper than the F series guns.

I have no idea what the Ivory grips would add to the value of the Dragoon. Do you have any of the boxes or packaging and the original walnut grips?

There were a few C1770MN 3rd model Dragoons that came in highly polished blue with one piece Ivory grips; but none of the cataloged models came with two piece Ivories. The two piece Ivory grips could have been a special order though.

I don't believe I am mistaken. While I don't have a photo; I do have two refernce books ("Percussion Colt Revolvers, The Second Generation, Collectors Handbook & price Guide - 2008" and "Sixth Edition Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Arms - 2009")that both say the MN series Dragoons (as well as the 1860 Army, 1862 Pocket Police, and 1862 Pocket Navy) had one piece Ivory grips. I know of no cataloged 2nd Gen with 2 piece Ivory grips. 2 piece ivory grips with medalions were Colt Custom shop items.

Absolutely correct.

I have the same reference material as FM, plus several Colt percussion catalogs from the seventies. Colt offered one piece grips only. Two piece would be a special order from the custom shop. They could very well be after market grips.

As far as pricing, what ever the market well support. Here's the same gun and case less the grips that sold for $650.

If your unsure about the grips being Ivory take a hot pin to the back, that well tell right away. There are quality faux Ivory grips that have the appearance and feel of Ivory. They can fool the experts at times.

I've also got the Colt BP catalogs from the 70s but they are sorely lacking in details about what was available.

If you would like a more definitive description of how this pistol was sold, you can contact Colt for an authentication letter. Being a 2nd Gen, Colt will letter it.
