I've come to the point in my life where I feel like I just gotta get one of these. It will be a 10mm. I would appreciate any comments from those with experience with these. Good, bad, ugly?

TERRIBLE WEAPONS!! :(
A few months ago, I arrived at work on a sat. morning. My dad, owner of our gunsmithing shop, told me he had a Colt that needed fixed. I figured it was going to be a 1911 in need of customizations... I WISH! There on my work bench was a Double Eagle 10mm. Everything looked A-1 except the grips and assorted springs were in a plastic bag. After inspection of the gun I realized that the grip screw holes in the frame were trashed!! I had the bushings, but they didn't look much better. I knew right away that I was missing a few parts, so I gave the owner a call. He said the grips flew off while shooting and that lately this gun was having extraction problems. YEP, barrel was wasted! Rounds were being loaded into the chamber too far due to wear. This built up enough pressure to blow the cases, and then blow the grips off. I had a hard time trying to find a replacement barrel in 10mm. but I found out that this problem is common to the 10mm. Double Eagles. So... to sum this up....
They are known to have major problems,
I don't like guns that have the DA trigger system on the outside of the frame( in the grips... EASY BREAKAGE!!)
and finially, parts are harder to find than other Colts... ESP. 10mm.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from the D.E.!!! You will thank me later!!

( the owner had the gun fixed, and traded it on a Glock 17)

STAY AWAY! These things are the biggest pieces of crap! A local PD had these things for duty weapons in .45ACP. They jammed and when the did fire they threw lead all over the place. The officers were seriously afraid for their lives and invested in backups. Most Glock 27s due to their reliability and punch. Finally they were abandoned for Glock 21s and they have had zero probs in about 2000 rds. If you want a 10mm Colt go with the Delta.

SHAZAM! I guess I'm over my mid-life crisis now. I've got a Delta, and like it. Thought this would be a good D/A version of it. Does anybody make a decent D/A 1911 in a 10mm?

A DA 1911?? Not many pistols meet that criteria. How about an original Bren 10? Or, Fernando at Triton should have the new versions out by summer 2001.

Seecamp used to do conversions at the custom shop and you can still find these if you look hard. I Got my DA lower from gun parts corp. But be forewarned you will end up with a robust but EXPENSIVE pistol and the DA pull make a NY trigger glock seem "light"

Still its very cool.

E-mail me and I'll send you a photo of it.

There was a 10mm DE in a local gunshop display case for seven years; the price didn't seem too out of line, so I wondered why it never sold . . .
I built a pistol on one of those Gun Parts DA frames, too. Convinced me that, at least in a 1911, DA is the answer to what question? It's a good conversation-starter at the range. My gun is pictured at "The Sight 1911" in the custom guns page.

muleshoe-An excellent 10mm in DA/SA is the EAA Witness. Excellent performer with a lot of conversions available for it anywhere from 22lr to 45 acp. The only drawback is the weight, but that doesn't bother me too much.

Does the .45 DE have the same problems as the 10mm? A co-worker recently bought one NIB and I would hate telling him the bad news. In fact, I tried to log onto TFL and see if anyone had any opinions on it. Damn those hackers!

hmmm...i seem to have the exceotion to the rule. my Double Eagle MkII 10mm is a sweet shooter. at 15m, it shot a 5 round group of less than 2" off hand. the gun is tight and i haven't had any problems with it. i haven't really been keeping a close tab on how many rounds have gone through it, but i would assum over 3000 since i bought the gun NIB. i bought mone for cheap due to a cosmetic flaw on the dished out portion of the front left side of the slide. easilly corrected by a gunsmith who recontured it.

the DA pull starts out heavy and then lightens up...take a little getting used to as i haven't felt another DA like it. the SA is crisp and lets off at about 5#s...not light, but feels good.

as for the grip panel keeping the trigger components, it is a weak point in the design for sure. this being said, i haven't had any problems with the factory grip panels and the custom grips i made up for it. it really looks sharp with the wood grips (not available...and not for sale) and u can see it here:

reliability has been flawless...except for a few reloads that were too long (my bad). it sounds like the Double Eagle that had problems had an owner that used hi-velocity and hi-pressure loads that beat the gun up. the 10mm is a very powerful round and the Delta Elite and i'm suspecting the Double Eagle don't do very well with a steady diet of full house loads without proper modifications (heavier springs, recoil buffers, etc...)

not the most well thought out design, but it works. i wouldn't use it as a combat weapon for the reasons explained above (hard to find parts, not in production, grip panel issue), but i wouldn't have any trouble using mine if the occassion arose.

just my 2 cents and experience.
