Colt Diamondback Grips

Hey all, a couple of years ago my dad bought a really nice Colt Diamondback on Gunbroker after having drooled over it since he had gotten into collecting. It was cheaper than the average Diamondback in spite of its near flawless shape, due to the Herrett grips that it came with. The grips are nice, no doubt, but he really wanted the gun itself. A few months later, he picked up a pair of Diamondback grips for it online to "complete" it, so to speak. However, I always had a nagging feeling that they weren't the right set, as the revolver we got is a 2.5" model and the I thought the ones he got were for the larger length Diamondbacks. Here are the grip types he got:

And like I said, I don't think that these are correct for a 2.5" Diamondback. Can you all let me know if these ever were standard with this length D-Back, or if we'd need a different pair (such as the following) to make the gun complete?

Thanks!

I believe the stocks in your second picture would have been standard on the snub D-Back. The larger stocks were used on the longer barreled guns. I've learned over the years you should NEVER say never when talking about Colt. They pretty much supplied the customer with whatever he wanted. (what a thought nowadays!) It doesn't really matter as long as you're happy shooting that wonderful gun.

Oh, believe me, it's a fantastic piece and the larger grips make handling it so much more comfortable (I doubt it's had more than 50 rounds put through it; we only fired it once after we got it). It's just one of those things where it's a classic, and you paid a lot for it, so it's worth going that extra mile to make it "correct."

So you're saying that while the second picture is likely correct, the customer could have always requested the larger grips from the factory?

Just for info, somewhere around this house and stuck away in some box that I may never find again, I should have wooden grips for a Python and a Diamondback. I put Pachmayers (did I spell that right?) on both pistols many years ago.

As for why I even have a Diamondback...I was guiding a hunt and a fellow had a 22 Diamondback. I loved it. He wouldn't consider selling it. I finally found my own.

I wonder where those grips are. Maybe the gun safe...

haon8 that is correct. If a customer wanted to order a Diamondback with the larger stocks Colt almost certainly would have supplied it. Thats one of the things about collecting Colts that'll drive you crazy. I'm serious when I say NEVER say NEVER when talking about a Colt.
