my detcetive special is the third model with the shroud. the serial# starts with the letter P. my colt book does not show a P in any model year. the numbers show it to be made in 1971. i am thinking that it was stamped by mistake. any help would be appreciated... thanks....

Proofhouse.com only goes up to 1978. It's probable that your DS was made sometime later.

You can call Colt's customer service department, and they'll provide the ship date. The phone number is on their web site.

The Colt "D" frame "P" series was made from 1981 to 1984.

1981 started at P01001
1982- P36850
1983- P61991
1984- P73252K-To end of the P series at P79999K

I believe that you can also get a factory letter from Colt that will provide information such as the exact date of manufacture and to whom the gun was originally shipped. The last I heard, however, Colt charges about $100 for this service. Most people who get factory letters do so only when they have, or believe they might have, a particularly uncommon or valuable gun.

Colt 38 ds info

slasherman1,
I inherited a COLT 38 DS along with Twin COLT 45 acp auto 80 series with all the info but It appears I have the EXACT issue with my COLT 38 Detective Special!
and my serial# is P386XX
I'm also trying to locate a owners manual for the COLT 38!
Anyway if you read this and have any further info that would be useful for me
Please feel free to contact me by email : junkyrddawg@msn.com
I am a diehard COLT fan and prior to inheriting these sweet units.....I have a few others! But I don't stare at my weapons...I shoot them quite often and they are part of the family.
I appreciate any info on the COLT 38 that you are willing to share!

I believe the Colt Letter is $75.00 for your model (prices vary depending upon weapon type). I am thinking about one one for my 1943 Colt Official Police. If you order the Letter consider having the letter addressed to "Colt Owner" vs. your name. This way the letter passes on with the firearm during future transfers.

I have one for my 1918 vintage Colt M1911, and it a nice touch framed and hung next my display case.

This is an OLD post, but..........

Serial number P386XX was made in 1982 as shown in the old post above.

Watch Ebay and the gun auction sites for Colt "D" frame owner's manuals.
Colt usually issued one manual for all the small frame Colt's, not manuals specific for the exact model. So, you won't find a newer manual specifically for the Detective Special.

Here's a link to online Colt "D" frame manuals.:

When buying a manual, watch out for non-original reprints, commonly known as FAKES. There are Colt owner's manuals, boxes and documents being counterfeited and sold all over.

Colt 38 Detective Special

Dfariswheel,
THANK YOU for responding and its good info! I did know it was around 1981 but no archived serial numbers I seen started with a "P" and that was confusing....but the Colt is Genuine!
Recently took it to the range and cycled about 50 rounds through it....shoots true and sweet just as a Colt would!

Just ordered a Leather shoulder holster from ANDREWS for it! It will be in the family forever!
