Hey!

I just found a NIB Colt Detective Special (.38Spl.) SS for $675.00 on the Internet. :D This snubby was discontinued in 1971 or thereabouts.

That's allot of bucks, plus S&H, etc. My question is, Is this a Good deal?, Or will I be getting hosed?

Assuming the "SS" refers to Stainless Steel, that's a "wrong number" to start with.
The Detective Special was never made in SS.
There were a limited number made with satin Electroless Nickel, also known as "Coltguard", which can look like SS.

In any event, that's WAY to much money for a Detective Special, even if it's a limited production EN gun and New in the Box.

The Detective Special was finally discontinued for the last time in the mid-1990's, and replaced by the Colt SF-VI/DS-II/Magnum Carry.

Dfariswheel a shop in town here has what he called a stainless D.S.He did say it wasnt a regular production gun that it was from the Colt Custom Shop.It is a 3" NIB.Do you know anything about such a gun?I know nothing about Colt's but I recall them not being stainless either. He was asking 400 for it but I wanted to know more about it before I bought it.

Colt did produce a few 3" shrouded Detective Specials.
These are NOT common, and often bring premium prices due to the low production.

The Custom Shop produced a good number of limited production Colt's over the years, and there were a number of various Detective Special versions.
A common feature of many Custom Shop guns was the Satin Electroless Nickel finish, which does LOOK like stainless steel.
Colt often called this finish "Coltguard".

Also, the Custom Shop will make about anything you can pay for, and many people have Custom Shop guns with special finishes, tuned actions, non-standard barrels, etc.

A 3" NIB Detective Special would be an excellent buy at $400.00, and depending on WHAT the Custom Shop features are, it could be a real steal.

The box should have the Custom Shop sticker and at least some details on the box.

You might want to look closely at this, it sounds like a good one.
