Colt Commando, 1940ish?

Hi group. I just picked up a parkerized 38 special Colt Commander (10xxx) with a 4" barrel, brown plastic grips and most of its finish intact. The tag on it said WWII era. It seems to be in very good shape with a very nice trigger. It locks up tight and has very little cylinder gap. Can anyone tell me anything about these? Like were they used by the military?

Thanks,

J.R.

Here's a link to some information on the World War II Colt Commando revolver. It was basically a roughly finished, less expensive version of the Colt Official Police revolver, a well made and very popular police sidearm from the early years of the last century. Sounds like you have a nice piece of history there. http://www.manatarmsbooks.com/pate.html

Thanks for the help Gabby! Now I'm really glad I bought it. I ordered my back order of the magazine with the article today. The action and trigger are very smooth and I cant wait to take it out and see how it shoots. Thanks again!

I saw a dozen or so of them at a recent show. They were drenched in cosmo, and in their original boxes. IIRC, the collector offering them wanted $900 each.

If you want to add a bit more authenticity to your Commando, here's a place where you can get a military surplus GI .38 cal revolver holster. http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com

Click on "Collectible Gun Items" down the left side of the home page. These were made by S&W, but knowing how Uncle Sam does things, will probably fit your Colt as well. Only $21.95 plus shipping.

If you want the complete setup that VictorLouis saw, the site also sells 10 lb. bricks of Cosmoline for $15. Then all you'll need is one of those $535 original boxes. :D

Thanks again Gabby. I was just thinking how my new old gun needs a "period" style holster. Besides that, I think I can do without the $500 box!

I guess I probably should've mentioned

that these were new-in-box, eh?:D
Of course, I still have no clue if they would be worth anywhere near that price.

Makes me wonder whether, 50, 75 or 100 years down the road, our great grandchildren will be wanderin' through the aisles at gun shows looking at $5,000 mint condition Beretta M9s from Desert Storm or the great terrorist wars of the turn of the century. Maybe I should sock a few away now. Heck, I'd be happy knowing that there were even going to BE gun shows in that many years. Just in case, though, I'm gonna put on an EXTRA THICK layer of Cosmoline. :D
