Colt commander

I just purchased a Colt Commander..I have it all apart except the extractor..It is a 70 series Colt..I have the slide all stripped except for the extractor.. it will move forward about a eight of and inch but no father...help..

Turn slide on top
Use appropriate size punch to push firing pin in while pushing firing pin stop up
Take out firing pin stop
Remove extractor

It sounds to me that you may be trying to move the extractor the wrong direction if you are moving it forward.The extractor does not push out of the slide, it's removed by pulling it out of the rear of the slide.
I assume you have removed the firing pin plate, if not and you can move the extractor an eight of an inch forward you have some other issues that need to be dealt with.

I actually find the Series 80's just a shade easier to breakdown. But then again it might be because I have more Series 80's and have gotten better at it.
