colt ar-15 modle numbers

i've been shooting ar-15's for the last couple of years. but something i still can't figure out. i can look at the side of my ar and it says "sporter match hbar". and i've seen them say "ar-15a2" and so on. my question is, how do you know what Model # a rifle is? for example. when i bought this, it was advertised as an model 6601. big deal. i never saw that anywhere on it. i guess what i'm asking is, if you don't know all the options on that particular rifle, and have an awesome memory to distinguish between a model 6530,6550,6600,6601, etc,etc,etc, how will a person know what model is what???

thanks, checked it out. i guess i've still got some learnin' to do. also, i want to share my news. i just bought an eagle arms SP-1, serial # 2,xxx complete pre ban rifle for $900. now i see an M4 parts kit in my future. so, in short, i'm now the proud daddy of 3 AR-15's.
