Colt antique revolver-help?

Just returned from my local SCV meeting.
One of our members donated a colt revolver.

He said it was an 1857 36 caliber

Stamped on top of the barrel is:
Address Saml Colt Hartford .
Serial number stamped on several pieces: 64738

Revolver is in pieces, but all seem to be accounted for
BARREL IS FAIRLY RUSTED..

Can anyone help to identify this by serial number

Any help appreciated.

My guess is that your gun is a Colt Model 1851 Navy, which was made between 1850 and 1873, with serial numbers up to greater than 215,000.

However, the barrel markings, according to my resources, don't match with the serial numbers. Before serial number 74,000, the barrel would have read, "SAMl COLT. NEW YORK CITY" and after serial 74,000, "SAMl COLT. HARTFORD CT".

Maybe someone else can provide better information. If you could provide pictures and additional info, it might help.

I only got a quick look a t the revolver, but if I recall right, there were no markings on the cylinder and the side of the trigger area was stamped Colt Patent US. The barrel was octagon shaped.

The serial number was stamped on two different pieces, so I know I read it correctly.

This is the best I can do.

cylinder rebated, or stepped?

Excuse my ignorance, but not sure of those terms.

All I really know about the revolver iwhat I have said so far.

?? Were all of the Navy type revolvers engraved on the cylinders

Thatnks to all for trying, I realized a picture would be a help, but did not have time or a camera to do anything more that a quick look.

I will pass this on to the Camp Commander who has the revolver and let him take it to a giun smith for repair etc............

ps..........no we will not make it look like new!!! <grin>
The Antiques Roadshow has educated many of us to the trials and tribulation of trying to restore something that looks good, but ends up deflating the value of the item in question.

Again, thanks to all.
