Colt 44 special

Hello, I am new to your site and am need of some help. I inherited a Colt Single Action Army revolver in 44 special caliber. It has a serial number of33704sa. I was wondering if any of you could give me a rough guess as to its worth, it is in very good condition and probably has had less than three boxes of shell shot through it. Thank you for your time.

I believe yours is a late 70s-80s model 3rd Gen. New production Colts are available for $1200-1400 or so street price last I checked--depending on finish and options--so I would certainly say no more than that. Lots of older 3rd Gen owners are amazingly trying (some succeeding) selling theirs for what you can buy new--or more! Knowldgeable buyers normally "don't buy it" unless the gun in question is a limited/special edition, especially since Colt quality seems to be up since/coincidental with re-intro of the removeable cylinder bushing in Spring 2003.

The "however" is - The main thing you have going for you is that, AFAIK, Colt is still not (again) chambering its fixed sight SAA in .44 Special - at least as a "discreet" (ie, non .44-40 convertible w/ spare .44 Sp cyl) catalog offering, though it is with the New Frontier re-introdiced last year. SO, though more of a niche market opportunity, you've got a "special" caliber some may be willing to pay more for--again meaning close to what folks can get other calibers for now - new.
Give $1100-1150-1200 a shot for a hoped-for reasonably quick sale, if that's what you're looking for.

Thank you for your help. After I posted this I found a link on another thread here that took me to a sight where you could look up when a colt saa was made. According to that sight the gun I have is a second generation model made in 1961. That date seems correct because I can remember my father having that gun in the 1960's.

Congratulations on your second generation Colt. AND it's noble 44 special cartridge. I collect these things and love them.

I stand corrected on the dating--missed my S's and A's --and increase what I said by at least $500. 2nd Gen .44 Specials are rare, especially in shorter barrels (as I type this I forget what yours is). The more common calibers are pricey now, I would think the .44 even moreso. Keep it! - or sell it for more.
