It looks like a Trooper. If it is .357 Magnum it is not a Python as there is not a vent rib barrel. It is not a Trooper MKIII as the internals are not the same. If it is a pre MKIII Trooper the internals are the same as those of the Python.

A picture of the entire gun will be more helpful. It is nearly impossible to identify one from pics of a few parts. The numbers on the inside of the crane are the last 4 digits of the serial#.

It is a Colt model 357.
Built from 1953-1961.
Somebody partially bobbed the hammer.
Agreed. A nice find although I wouldn't care for the bobbed hammer either. The Colt "three five seven" as it's almost always called, is basically the same gun as the Python, without the vent rib barrel, and the polished internals. Time has probably taken care of polishing them though.

Howdy

The marking in question is a VP in an upside down triangle. The VP stands for Verified Proof. Colt started stamping that at the front left side of the trigger guard of the Single Action Army around 1901 or so, to show that the gun had been proofed for Smokeless Powder. As far as I know, they have been stamping the VP ever since then. Dunno about the most recent Colts, most of mine are pretty old.

I have a lot of Colts with the Verified Proof marking on them, but it is sometimes hard to read. The marking is very clear on this Police Positive Special from 1926.

I have a 357 and it is an excellent revolver.

Google Jack First gun parts. They may have something. Also try Numrich gun parts
