Hi Thank you all for your help on my other topic.I now have more questions for you very knoledgeable pepole, you have been a great help.So here goes,i was telling my brother about my recent post and my problem about a side arm.He "loaned" me a nib Colt 1991a1 i don't think he has fired more than 50 rds. through it.Don't you have to put something like 200 rds. thru a govt. model to "break it in"?Are you supposed to use FMJ or LRN?Also i have read that stock 1911's do not like hollow points. Is this so?Will the 1991 Colt feed them?Any brands you care to recomend?About stopping power didn't the .45 gain its rep as a man stopper long before hollow points were on the seen, and using FMJ right? How about LRN for defense? My brother said to use those for reliable feeding and drill a very small hole in the front of them.Won't the bullets break up if you do that?He may have been joking around to.Anyway thanks for the help guys bye.

First, use will help to loosen up (break-in) any new firearm.

Second, round nose will almost always feed more reliably that hollow point, especially with a "dealer stock" semi auto pistol.

Third, NEVER EVER DRILL OR OTHERWISE WORK ON AN ASSEMBLED ROUND. Unless, of course, you do not value you tools, fingers, eyes or life. In any event, making a dum-dum bullet is a sure way of guaranteeing inaccuracy. Stick with factory bullets.

First off get to the range and shoot some. See if you like the old .45 The FMJ will probaly feed the best but some of the JHP feed really well also like Hydrashocks. But different guns like different ammo, even amoung the same types of pistols. Good luck and I hope you find what your looking for.

Brands of Ammo: I prefer the five major brands: Winchester, Federal, Speer/CCI, PMC, and Remington. Start with 200 or 300 rounds of hardball. After this exercise, try some JHP to see what feeds reliably.

The question of stopping Power: You can get a lot of arguments on this question. Personally, I have no problem with hardball in .45 ACP despite what some "study" may show. Winchester hardball I like.

I generally avoid LRN, but many handloaders use lead bullets to their satisfaction.

Finally, placement of shot is everything, no matter what round is used. Practice makes perfect.

You shouldn't have any trouble feeding hollow points through your 1999A1. Mine was reliable right out of the box. The best 1911 variant that Colt has produced in years in my opinion. I would recommend that you fire a few hundred rounds through it to break it in before trusting it as a duty sidearm. Whatever load you choose for this is fine, it really doesn't matter for break in.

I prefer the 230 grain Federal Hydrashok for carry use. This has the best overall track record of the .45acp loads. The Remington Golden Sabre is also a good round. The nice thing about the old .45 is that almost any load you choose will get the job done, some will just do it a little quicker.

I don't care for hardball as a duty load myself. There are simply better loads
available. One of the reasons why I prefer the 230 grain hollowpoints is that even if they don't expand (which they'll all do sooner or later) you still have a big heavy bullet working for you. The best of both worlds I guess.
