Colt 1991A1 Accessories?

Hello All,

Just picked up a Colt 1991A1 and wanted to dress it up a little. Bought all the neat things for it: Wide Beavertail Grip safety, Comat Hammer, Matching sear, you know the works and all Chip McCormack stuff. One problem, the grip safety didn't match up to the rear of the frame, which blew the new hammer and sear out of the water. My question, Is there anyone who makes aftermarket parts for these or do I have to take the gun to my 'smith for frame adjustments? I'm now stuck with three parts I can't use. Any help and information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pat

Pat:

Grip safeties come in two types: "drop-in" and "fitted". Sounds like you got the second type. The frame needs to be cut to allow fitting of the grip safety, a job you can do yourself if you are mechanical but one I recommend having a smith perform for you. I sent one of my Colts to Novak's and had an Ed Brown grip safety installed and it's a work of art. Brownell's catalog has a jig which you can use to cut the frame fairly safely, but, again, only if you are good with tools, etc. Wilson's makes a good drop-in grip safety which I installed on my 1991-A1 and it works well. Not as good a feel as the custom Ed Brown but it does the job. Check Wilson's web site for that part. Good luck!

Thank you for the response. I guess when Chip says "user friendly", he means that in a subjective way, huh?:D I consider myself pretty much mechanically inclined, but I'll give my smith a call, I'd hate to mess up a perfectly good pistol.

Thanks again,

Pat

Get a drop-in grip safety first. That way if you want to go back to the original grip safety later you still can. I cut the frame of my oler Series 80 years ago for a beavertail. Although it went fine, I simply prefer the standard safety now and wish I could go back.

Hi dsk,

I think that's a good idea. I'll try to sell the parts I bought (company I bought from charges a 15% restock fee) and buy the drop ins.

Thank you again for your response,

Pat
