Colt 1917 Serial

I realize I’ve asked this question before on another post, but I didn’t receive an answer. When looking up the serials on my Colt 1917, I got different results. The serial number on the frame dates it to 1919, but the serial number on the butt says it was made in May of 1918. Could anyone help me out on this?

If you’re looking up the serial number using a colt database use the one not on the butt. If you’re looking up using the military database use the US government number of the butt of the gun.

That’s exactly what I did. The one on the Colt website said it was made in late 1919. But the military database said it was used in the army in May of 1918. And no one has been able to explain that.

You'd have to provide the serial numbers in order for anyone to be of much assistance.

You have to realize that databases compiled from 100 year old data that was put together during a time of war might not be 100% accurate. Anybody who works with data much knows mistakes get made frequently, numbers get transposed, numbers get entered wrong, etc and thats with people using computers.
