I went into a store today to buy a gun, I have an addiction. An old colt 1911 government model on sale about 85% for $495. The thing is bigger than anything I own. Plus I don't get the whole 1911 thing. First of all, is that a good price, and second how would I carry a gun so big. I am 5' 9" and abotu 150 lbs, so I just don't think its so practical, unless I want a piece of history. Am I wrong?

Ex tunnel rat buddy of mine ran about 5'3", and jockey weight and build. He carried one IWB and I doubt he was ever spotted.

I'm a behemoth,and I could hide 3 or 4, I guess.

That's a fair price,and you'll regret it if you don't get it,IMO...

Hoosierboy, if size is of concern, buy a Colt Officer's Model (called Compact in the parkerized 1991A1 model). I carry one when working plain clothes and often when off-duty. I've never been advised by anyone that they saw the gun (when I was trying to conceal it).

I second George's statement.

As for as concealability, I'm 5'5 115 lbs and I carry a full size 1911 with no problems. The KEY is a good belt and holster and I don't mean an Uncle Mike's.

Oh how I love the 1911! I was young and foolish, and purchased the Beretta 96, but all along I drool over the 1911. I probably got a nicer gun than the JMB special, but until I have one, I will always want one. If I'd have found one for that price, I'd have snatched it off the shelf. It is almost identical to what I want. A Govt. Surplus, 1911 in its original form. I even want some of the finish worn off of it. A functional piece of history.

it was a shop in Michigan city indiana if anyone wants the number email me and I will give yout the info.

I'm 5'5" circa 185# [Ya, I know. Short & Fat (Ugly Too)] and I can carry a G' Model "No Problem" using a Milt Sparks Versa-Max 2.

I thought some people bought guns they liked just to shoot or collect, not necessarily to carry. Am I too old fahsioned or did someone make it illegal to own a gun without carrying it all the time?

Jim Keenan,
I guess I'm old fashioned too.
I agree with you.....completely. :)

Well I bought it today, I wont carry it until I get a holster for it. I hope I did the right thing.

My 1911 is a Para-Ordnance P13.45. Excellent gun. I looked at the full size and the officer's size, but the commander size fit me the best.

Quite frankly, depending on how you dress you can carry any gun you want. I've carried my 6 inch Anaconda in a shoulder holster! But the bigger the gun, the more limited you are as to what you can wear.

Don't know about the price. It really depends on what shape it's in and other factors.
