Hi, I am moving to colorado from california in the middle of this month. I would like to know if anyone is willing to fill me in on the gun carry laws. It says you do not need a license to carry openly, but can it be loaded? What is the requirements while driving a vehicle? Also here in california we are not alowed to have our weapons loaded, in our vehicle or elsewhere. i understand you can have you weapon loaded, but not have a round chambered. Is that right? Please, please tell me anything i need to know. I am moving outside of denver, in jefferson county i think.

Thank you all in advance. :)

alright, i'll see what I can remember, and I don't guarantee anything I say here.

In CO. it is legal to open carry anywhere instate, (except for certain cities such as denver) and where guns are allowed (i.e. NOT a courthouse or bar), but you can and likely will get charged with brandishing or something cheap if someone complains. CCW is shall issue as long as you qualify, and it is legal to take it most places (i.e. NOT a school). As far asa car carry goes, longguns must be unloaded and preferably in a trunk or far away from driver. Don't keep ammo for longguns in the same case or bag as the guns, as that can be considered loaded here. Handguns are legal to keep loaded in your car as long as they are not concealed on your person (glovebox is legal).

as far as loaded guns, such as in your house, perfectly legal as long as they are not readily accessible to minors, or people not allowed to have guns.

I may have gotten something wrong, if i did, please correct me, and always check yourself before you do anything.

Actually the requirement is the CHAMBER be unloaded. It's OK if its magazine is loaded.

In part, from RCS http://cbi.state.co.us/ccw/Statutes/33-6-125.asp
33-6-125. Possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle.

It is unlawful for any person, except a person authorized by law or by the division, to possess or have under his control any firearm, other than a pistol or revolver, in or on any motor vehicle unless the chamber of such firearm is unloaded. ...

Most of the answers are here or on packing.org, but to throw in a few other things ...

  • The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) considers their campus exempt from either legal open or concealed carry, even with a permit. This may or may not stand up in court, but at this time they are still enforcing strict anti gun rules.
  • No open carry in Denver. I believe under the new laws they were suppose to post signs for such areas, but I woudln't trust that.
  • I wouldn't carry openly anywhere in the Denver metro area. Rural areas of Colorado are probably OK.
  • Carrying concelaed in your car/on your motorcycle without a permit is fine, except in Denver which got exempted from that law.
  • Denver is also still able to enforce its AWB for Denver residents. Don't move to Denver proper.

Overall Colorado is a great state from every point of view, including gun owners. Very few business post against carrying concealed, and you CAN carry concealed in a bar as long as you have your license (and aren't legally under the influence).
