Colorado Hunter in seek of Coyote/Varmint

Hi and thank you for stoping by. i will be as direct as possible.
i have a valid small game hunting license in colorado, i am in search of prairie dog fields ( maybe your backyard), coyote.
i teach at a medical school and i have every fri-sat-sun off and i would like to go out with my 22lr scoped and do some varminting. i also have an ar15 with a mil scope 16inch barrel nice and short to keep it compact that i use for coyotes.

I am willing to learn the ropes if someone has a pointers or can point me in the right direction.

As a vet i can assure safety is my priority.

For coyotes, watch coyote hunting videos to learn how to call. Get a good open reed type call, they are the most versatile.

You don't need to spend hundreds on an electronic caller.

Skunk essences are the best cover scent.

Don't over use your call. About half my coyotes I ambushed without calling.

Learn where they go and what they do. They like to use game trails, cattle trails and other paths. They will hug fences and other structures as they travel.

They like to poop on top of things to mark territory. Even trash dumpsters.

When you are about to quit, they show up.
 
What you need to do is get good state map and there some public ground out east that you can hunt some of it's called State Wildlife Area that you have access to.

I'm not sure when it is but have season on PD public ground need to check with DOW. I'd seen one of your post that you live in Florida? I'm not sure but you should also check with DOW about Habitat Stamp if hunting on state land.

As to Coyotes you can head to the NF/BLM ground to hunt them. some of the ranches out east are leasing hunting right out for PD.

rickyrick gave you some good pointers and pay close attention to the last one.

There's been many a time I was getting ready to pack up and move to a new set, at the last minute here comes "ole wiley", stops and starts looking around wondering where the crying rabbit nosie came from.

Anymore I stay about 30 minutes on a set, then sneak out like I did sneaking in.

Two more tips, beware the coyote shaped bushes and stumps, take a few minutes to identify those.

If you fashion your own call lanyard and make it too long.....umm.....you may....umm.... Pee on one of your calls....
 
Coyotes have been really quiet this year strangely here in CO. With the fire you'd think they would have driven them out like with the bear and lions. I've seen more bear, lion, elk, and even moose this year than coyote.
 
In Colorado there are quite a few walk-in areas that the State rents for hunting, They are usually accessible from Sept. to March. Google DOW walk-in program for a list.

Once I've found a likely spot on I use Google Earth to scout the area from the kitchen table before driving out. I usually scout for drainages on the satallite map and setup within 1/2 mile of water for the first stand of the day.
