College Chemistry

How many times did you guys fail it before you passed?? Coming close to the end of my semester and don't know if I can pull a C. Just want to hear if repeating it a few times is normal.

None, but then again there was only 87 elements when I took it. But that's better than Grayfox, they only had 3 back then - Earth, Air and Firewater. :D

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Fortunately, Chemistry was not required for my degree. OTOH, I had some great times with the bunson burners in high school chemistry too many years ago to admit.

I never repeated Chem. But I have repeated a few other classes. Take it from one who knows, a single class doesn't make or break a college career.

Later,
Chris

If you are dealing with equilibium equations and P and N orbitals I can still remember the pain  I had a year of inorganic Chem. 3 quarters in a row. Started with almost 30 students in the first quarter and 7 in the last quarter. We had at least one student in the class who was a National Merit Scolarship winner and I think only her and one other person could have passed the class on a strict % as I recall the high score for the last quarter was posted by her with 70% of possible points. The grades were "curved" steeply.

Does that help any? Oranic Chem I avoided but I hear it may be worse :D

BTW No one in the class got all the labs completed for the last quarter for at least 2 weeks AFTER school was supposed to be done!!!

There can be only one!

I passed college chemistry during Fall quarter my Freshman year (1999). :)

For some odd reason, you can't take chemistry without placing into calculus. Being quite ignorant when it comes to math, I placed into basic algebra.. but I passed the chemistry placement with flying colors! I managed to pull a straight "C" in the course. Thank God my major (computer science) doesn't require any more chem! Now math is another matter...
:D

Aaaauuuggghhhh!

You just awakened that sleeping bad memory!

Seriously, once the matter of electron orbitals 'clicked' in my head, chemistry (and therefore materials sciences) became a lot easier to understand. You know, like why elements act the way they do! This is a good thing for an engineer to know! ;)

ROTFLMFAO!!! Good one!

The only way you will truly fail is if you give up on getting through it!

Have you tried the tutor route? I know it's not manly, but sometimes just going through the same material with a little different perspective makes all the difference.

I'd offer to help personally, but live near a different ocean than you. If something comes to mind, let me know!

ps. I remeber getting out of the military and starting college, I had to take no credit math for two semesters... Once I learned how to study, and really resolved that I was going to keep studying until I understood and remembered everything taught, It all worked out. Not easy (read not much time left for partying, riding cycles, or shooting....), but the grades were there.... And now I can play a bit more...

Good luck!

Uhhh, I dropped the second quarter of organic chem. once before I passed it, other than that I made it through...
3 qtrs. Inorg. Chem. (learn the rules, learn to use them)
3 qtrs. Org. Chem. (forget the rules, learn to memorize)
3 qtrs Physical Chem. (basically, applied calculus)
at Ga. Tech.

Not that I had a good gpa or anything - I spent a fair amount of time on the dean's "other" list...still, I got the paper that says I made it. A job, now that was a different story...

Boy this hits close to home.

I'm squeaking through my first Chem. course en-route to a Nursing degree.

It's a discipline problem, though. The material is not difficult, but I don't find it interesting.

Fortunately, I've got enough time left to raise my grade.

I was in bout the same boat as you are. I did not have any trouble with the math part, it was the lab. Seems I could never get those little packets to agree what my math said they should be. Came down to the last three weeks of class and I had four weeks worth of lab to finish up. Without the labs I would get a D, with maybe a C. Fortunately for me they were in the process of moving the school that year and they closed the school down two weeks early. My instructor told me that I could finish up my labs in the fall. When I showed up that fall, he said that I had gotten a C and to get lost. OK by me.... :)

Find books in the library with the answers in the back and work the problems until you have them down cold. Don't be intimidated by dimensional analysis and "moles" just...

Work the problems
Work the problems
Work the problems

It is the tough but successful method. As a chem major you can take this as good advice.

I'll let you know after I find out if I pass the final :D . (Who ever heard of having a final on SUNDAY night?)
I think I'm going to pass, which is good because I'm supposed to graduate next Sunday.
I don't know for sure because I don't get the last test back until 11:00 today.

Check this out:
I passed Chem, but had to reapeat (are ya ready for this?)...........

I have this number running around my brain (random access memory at its best!)

6.02 x 10^23

AND, I used to have the entire periodic table committed to memory. Symbol, Name, Atomic weight, etc.

Well, I passed all four quarters of Chem. at Tech, but that was under Doc. Berry; He didn't LET you flunk tests! Had a stack of different tests a foot high, and if you flunked a test you sat in a little room outside his office, taking one test after another until you passed one, even if you were there for DAYS. Brrrr, that guy was scary!

Don't worry, your diploma won't show either your GPA or how many times you repeated chemistry.
Of course, neither does your doctor's diploma, which is always something to think about.

Cougar, you retained Avogadro's number!
:D

Turns out I'll pass. In fact, I'm in much better shape than I thought.

Good luck!
