Cold weather carry

Real Gun

Updating my carry choices, I am starting to put aside my guns that are easier to conceal and reuniting with hardware that for me requires more clothing to cover them up.

One immediate change in the smaller guns is that I shoot so well with my Smith 60-10 and moderate power 357 ammo that I put aside the more logical choice of 6 rounds pf 32 H&R in my Ruger Sp101.

My regular winter carry though is 5 rounds of 44 Special in either a Smith 696 or Taurus 441.

I see youre in SC so winter is not as severe as other places....

had I my druthers and lived in a small quaint New England town with no government housing anywhere for miles, and a revolver was my choice; my summer carry would probably be my Charter Arms 2.5" Bulldog .44spl. in the winter it would be my S&W 4" 629 with the same loads from the Bulldog.

you seem to have the same understanding, I think you'll be served well.

When I was in LE (Anchorage) we were issued parka's with a zip up side to allow access to our service revolvers.

It was slow and the gun often hung up so I took to carrying a snub nose in my coat pocket.

No one thought anything of someone, even a cop walking around with his hand in his pocket.

You're always ready and the hammer less (or non-exposed) revolver could be fired while in the pocket.

I continued this practice when off duty and after I retired, only with the little Smith in my pants pocket.

All year around. No one knows I carried. No one thinks it odd that I normally have my hand in my pocket. And (since the hand is on the gun anyway) its extremely fast.

Since I always wear pants, I see no reason to change my method or gun with the seasons.

I never carry a pocket gun, because although better than none, I am willing to carry what it takes for more rounds or more fire power. When driving, my 637 snub is in my go bag as backup or one that is easier to reach while seated in the car. That gun could as easily be the 30-1 in 32 SWL to give me 6 rounds instead of 5. Neither gun is one I would care to lose, but the 32 SWL in collector condition is better left at home.

Im in the mountains of Colorado currently and i do change my carry method/gun when it drops below zero here:(

I upsize my normal "summer gun" from a G26 carried AWIB to a G19 carried the same way. I add a ultra light J frame to a coat pocket.

Like Kraig above. The J frame gives me the ability to have a firing grip on the gun in the pocket AND be able to fire 5 shots without having to do anything but point and pull the trigger.

Works great at "get off me" distances. At longer engagement ranges i'll have more time to get to my G19 as i move off the X and head to cover

The J frame becomes the "I need it RIGHT now" gun and the Glock is the "ohhh carp, im in it again" gun

I used to change carry guns when the weather got colder. I would go from a P32 in summer, to a 638 in winter. I discovered a Kangaroo Carry in my closet that I had bought but never really tried. I found it allowed me to easily carry a heavier revolver. I now carry a Taurus 617, and when winter comes, it slips into my jacket pocket easily. Now, I simply change my method of carry, not my gun.

With winter.. I can carry anything from my Ruger Toklat down to my P32.

Good sleeveless vest and just about anything can be packed.

Normally I just use my Glock 26.

But I sure could pack any number of wheelguns.

Or even this:

Kraigwy I did the same in NYC in a coat pocket in winter or a sports jacket pocket in the summer. Smith and Wesson 940. No one ever knew.

I have a winter coat with a zip pocket right over my chest area. a 2" 357 fits perfectly. If I need something bigger I can carry ITW my 4" 357. EZ to get to.

Twice, many years ago, I found myself in a situ where 5 rounds just wasn't going to be enough. Needless to say, I'm capacity sensitive. While I have a J frame, I rarely carry it due to capacity. My latest revolver is an S&W 627 snubbie, N frame with a 8 round cyl.

I must be mentally challenged or something. My hardest carry time is cold winter.

In summer, i usually carry under an untucked polo or button up shirt. Works well IWB. In hot summer, I carry in my pocket.

Spring and fall, I carry under a long sleeve shirt in a similar way.

In deep winter, I have a coat, but it comes off when I go inside houses or many businesses. Continuing Fall carry seems like the coat makes it unreadable. Adding a pocket gun is a pain.

Right now, I tend to do a multitude of things that either leave me cold or too hot!

I swap out my summer carry M&P Shield 9mm for my Makarov come winter.

It fits perfectly in my Parka pocket which I have reinforced with an extra row of stitching along the sides and bottom. The stitching can not be seen on the outside so known are the wiser that the pocket was modified.

Extra mags I carry on my belt in a couple of horizontal pouches.

Edit*Sorry I missed this was revolver based but cold weather carry deals with diff. actions.

It is certainly conceivable that a season change could trigger a switch from revolver to semi or vice versa. Different generations and genders dress and choose guns differently, so there is a lot of scope inherent in the question at hand.
