In two weeks I, my daughter and 2 grandsprogs will be flying into Colorado Springs to visit my son who is living in Wheat Ridge (attending CTS). Other than doing a massive grocery run for him
peach_md_wht.gif
we have a day to kill on our own.
Can you suggest one or two quick things we might want to see or do? My son will be no help since, by his own admission, he has NO LIFE.
I am correct in assuming that you all are in that area, yes?

Yes, we live in Da Springs. So do Hube and Frontsight, and a few others. Maybe we oughta make plans for a range trip?

Quick things to ooh and aah at:

1) Garden of the Gods. Main entrance is on 30th Street about halfway between GoG Road and Highway 24. No charge.

2) Pikes Peak Highway. It costs $10 to drive to the top (per car or person, I'm unsure which) and takes about an hour. Less if you're brave and/or stupid. ;)

That's about all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure others will come up with more suggestions.

The range trip sounds like something my son would want to be available for, like on Friday or Saturday when he's not in school. Good thought! I know he'll set one day aside to take the sprogs and us to the Denver zoo.
We may opt for Garden of the Gods. (I don't do windows or climb freakin' mountains -- and besides I don't think his truck would live to see the top).
Thanks for the thoughts!

Well in a recent trip through Monarch Pass, my wife, who is afraid of heights, had to have a drink or seven to get her over the Pass- Cliff hanging roads- in her stupor (God, I love this woman) she said,

"Yoush can take these firiggin' mountains, and shove them up your a$$"

Range trips are good. Lots of micro-brews in restaurant. Drink alot- the altitude makes it fun.

dragon man's, off dragonman way (go figure) in cholo sprgs.
why flying into the springs? rather than dia. dia is 20 min from the school of trades where as co sprgs is at least 1 1/2 hrs not counting traffic and construction,

I know it's quite a bit to the south, but the NRA Whittington Center is about 150 miles south on I-25.

There's also Capulin Volcano National Monument.

I HIGHLY recommend both places, if for nothing else than the scenery!

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

JimC: first, what is Dragons Man? I'm curious.
Going to Denver from here is truly a "you can't get there from here" fiasco. Fares to Denver are astronomical! But to Colorado Springs, they are almost half. As it is, we need to drive to Boston first! THEN, it becomes affordable. Weird.
But, my son lives in Wheat Ridge, which will be our base of operations. According to him, it's not too bad (and he's the one picking us up, so I don't care -- nice mommy!).

No one except for folks who have seen everything else need to go the the Air Force Adademy. A drive on I-70 up to Glenwood Springs, then down through Aspen and back via Independence Pass and Hwy 24 (and maybe a stop at Cripple Creek). Might do the trick, too. I-70 has some of the most beautiful scenery in the area (possibly the nation), and if you're an architecture buff like me, you'll appreciate the way it was built so that it didn't dteract from the canyon. Shooting is always fun,, too!

Oh, yeah!

sittin' in a tree....

Dragon Man is Mel Bernstein, a wannabe SoF type who loves ATF (yes, I'm serious). His range officers are idiots. My advice: stay well clear of his operation.

:p @ Steven.

While I do like one of DM's range officers, (HE let me shoot his guns), DM does not rent.

The guns on display are over oiled (dripping on the floor) and/ or dusty. The drive up to the fortress is guarded by shot up cars, bloody manequins, and billboards threatening death. It is kind of funny, for those of us with sick senses of humors, but it does help to ensure that anti's will stay anti's. It also prevents me from bringing my 12 yo step-daughter to a range to begin the indoctrination into the dark side.

Last summer, I brought my Uzi to DM. None of the other shooters knew what it was (of course Uzis look soooo much like other guns  ). That didn't bother me... but the RO didn't even know what it was. When I told him, he snarled "Don't be hosing down my range!"... conveniently overlooking the gangstas out in front of the line while the range was hot.

Coinneach and mrsMTN (and other Coloradans). I have a pretty good place to go that's only 20 minutes away from town...BUT there are no target stands or anything else...it's just a sand quarry that the owner lets me use. 4-500 meter shots are possible. We'd just have to organize our target situation.

where are you located?
when in the denver metroplex go up to central city/blackhawk for some gambling.
or depending on how long you are going to be in town for, drop me a line and be a guest at my range, or there are a few indoor ranges in the area too.
ask your kid if ross is one of his instructors.

i knew mel when he was running a m/c repair shop out of a 900sq.ft building back in ny.

jimc, I live in Peyton.

I'm not quite understanding your instructor Q, but Coinneach and I are instructors for a class here in town.

Mel says he informs the ATF if they buy a class 3 and he doesn't like their looks.

Leadville is pretty nice...there is one awesome bridge that must hang off the mountain two miles up. My travel partner is from Grand junction and she HATES heights! ~LOL~ We endd up staying in Parachute on the Western slope. nice country up there and i'd like to come back IF I ever get the money...

Spent some time hiking the High Plains Desert looking for wild horses and indian artifacts...cave paintings and such. Rock hunting and photography. :) [[put a LOT of emphasis on the photo part. I burned about $300 worth of film. :)]]

I even got to slide on some snow in the niddle of the Summer! :) :) :)

Can't remeber where but we saw what looked like a couple of wolves off in the distance...they dissapeared into a draw and later I was photoing a nice mountain valley full of flowers and a deer walked out of the brush about 20ft from me! Had a wide angle lens on and he stood there until I changed lens and took off...stupid deer! ~LOL~

What are the gun laws like up there? I've heard it's gotten bad since columbine?
