Cocking serrations/holster interference

Slide serrations/holster interference

Hey guys, those forward cocking serrations on new Springfields and Kimbers don't bother me looks wise, but they're definately causing added friction and wear in my leather IWB holster. Any suggestions?

Its a holster made by Mark DeCoveny (Mark THG here on TFL). He hasn't been around in quite a while.

The problem is down low where the front serrations are. The holster has a ring that keeps it open for reholstering, but nothing down low because it shouldn't be necessary (it would be uncomfortable, too!). Every draw results in little leather pieces in those serrations.

The front slide serrations really help those with weaker hands, but I have never been fond of them. I think the ones on that gun could be made less sharp and still retain their functionality with a little polishing down of the sharp edges. On a blued gun, this would obviously require a reblue job, but on a stainless, it should be able to be done and the appearance not harmed.

Just getting rid of the razor edges might help quite a bit on the holster wear problem.

The edges are not sharp at all. They are, however, edges just the same.

Will the leather wear in there to the point it won't be a problem?

Lonegunman, pardon my faux pas.

Sorry, Steve Smith, I wasnt coming down on you at all!

I have heard other people call them that too... just never made since to me.

:) Haven't posted here for a long time. Those serations are for a press check, I think. The ones on my Wilson CQB are smooth and don't harm my lined Galco, but the ones on an ill fated Springfield loaded model were sharp as a razor. I think your solution would be a small file if the gun is stainless. I don't much care for the looks of the front serations but most people seem to. Guess my age is showing. Shoot Safe.......CO

AAAA they're not sharp, I tel ya!

Really! However, the holster was used for a commander length gun w/o the serrations, so it never got wear down there, and in addition is rough side in and unlined. It definately is getting wear now.

Is there a leather lubricant or something that would help here?

See, the thing is, that the slide is squeezed between my pants and my hip, so no matter how smooth the serrations, they will still abrade the holster there.

Why not try a new holster? It sounds like he didn't get the blank exactly right. Problems none the less. Is it slowing down the presentation?

I would recommend Milt Sparks. Tony is very good.

I have front sers on all my 1911s. They help during systems check because my hands will be sweaty or bloody or both and I like to dig into the weapon underneath. Coming up underneath allows me to check tactile and visual (tactile most important because it will be dark).

OR

You might consider filing/stoning/crocusing those edges to a smooth rounded non-aggresive profile, like a 'dehorn' or 'melt'.

Highly recommend an actual carry gun have NO SHARP EDGES (or even kinda-sharp).
OLD-TIMEY ADVICE = Stick your hand in a pair of nylons and slide your hand over/around gun; if it snags ANYWHERE dehorn that spot.

Then have it NP3'ed; soft, smooth, and FLIES! from your holster.

At least mine does (Caspian, of course) from my Milt Sparks 1AT and Galco Royal Guard.

(IMNSHO front serrations -and rear ones, for that matter- are worthless. I grab the rear sight. Or push the slide against something. Did I mention I'm not big on cosmetics? LOL)
