Cobray PM-11 (again)

All right, I have to admit I'm dying to try/maybe buy one of these evil looking little buggers, just because they will likely be banned soon.

Any body have any first-hand experience with this pistol? I realize that accuracy is a laugh, but how about reliability? Do the mags actually stay put with the ball detent device? Can you add an original grip and magazine clip? Am I nuts?

Well, I'm afraid that I only have experience with the full-auto model of this gun, however I know that you can use the 33 round mags in the new ones. I have no idea about a ball/detent. The one I used has a mag release. I would honestly have to say that I really couldn't see much reason to having one of these in semi-auto. It fires from an open bolt, which is not great for accuracy in stock configuration. It is very top heavy, has terrible balance if holding with only one hand, and the barrel isn't threaded, so you can't put a supressor on it.
Seriously though, these were really cheap sub-guns when they were made, and from what I've heard, the semi-auto modern ones are even cheaper. I'd love to own one in full-auto, they are easily configurable in lots of different ways, but I don't think I would plunk down the cash for a semi version.

I am an owner of a PM-11, semi-auto version (a gift). Its pretty darn robust. The factory clip and 32-rnd clip will stay in with the ball. Mine came with an advertisement inserted in it for the mag catch and grip assembly. Can't seem to find that right now, though. Accuracy isn't too much to laugh at, unless you just plan to 'pray and spray' with it. It is heavy. One handing is possible, but not recommended. The bolt to chamber is pretty hard to pull. Breakdown is super-simple. Cleanup is a breeze. I think the going price now is about $275 - $300. I personally wouldn't buy one unless you had extra money to spend, but it is a fun little gun to shoot (and gets many dirty looks when rapid firing at the range). :)

I traded something for a like-new SWD Cobray M-11 (not PM-11) in 9mm a few years back. Have one Zytel and one metal mag for it. Also a sling and fake suppressor. Can't get it to feed ball ammo with either mag==so don't know if the gun is junk or it I'm blessed with two bad mags. Anyone interested in buying this fine pre-ban / high-capacity / like NIB / reliable / collector piece for $6000.00 ? ? ?

RCS, I wasn't aware the PM-11 fired from an open bolt. I believe ATF required MAC, SWD, COBRAY, etc. to make only closed-bolt versions after about 1985 or so (so the guns couldn't so easily be converted to full-auto). Anyone know for sure? The machine gun board (subguns.com) probably has info on same.

Current versions of Cobray fire from a closed bolt. Accuracy is pathetic in part because of a heavy trigger with a very painful reset. Internal parts (hammer, trigger parts) are prone to breakage. Plastic magazines don't work and all magazine fail to stay inserted. I'd skip this one...it won't be fun.

I have a thing for cheap pre-ban pistols, I had a few Kimel AP9's- sold them for good $$. But I still have a new Intratec DC9 (never fired), and a preban Cobray M11- which I fire occasionally, I never had any problems with it- bought it for $400 with a few mags, fake suppressor, mag loader.

It doesn't really jam- maybe 2 times out of 100. Fun to shoot, and parts are widely available- from RPB for example.

If you have $300-$400 lying around, and want something neat to look at (conversation piece) and shoot, and don't want to blow $1k on an Uzi pistol- and don't mind the hohum quality (not horrible though), try an M11.

Just a little JG banter.

Of course you could go the NFA route and get a full auto one of these. THey are still the least expensive full auto gun you can get. I think you can find them for around 7-8 hundred, plus the $200 transfer tax. My friend recently lucked out and got one for $350 plus the transfer. And why bother with a fake supressor? Buy one from subguns.com.
Of course there still is a $200 tansfer on that as well, but hey, it's only money.

I didn't realize that the ATF had made Cobray change their design so that the new ones fired form a closed bolt.
