Cobra ammo

Can I safely shoot +p's in in a colt cobra circa. 1962 or should I avoid them alltogether? I'm told the later cobra's can handle +p's but mine is to early...

Hello. You could probably use a very limited number of Plus P rounds without loosening things up too much, but who can say? What I'd suggest is Federal Nyclad 125 gr HP. This standard pressure load uses a pure lead hollowpoint covered with a nylon jacket and expands readily as it has no gilding metal jacket to rupture. Informal tests I've performed indicate reliable expansion. Best.

Suggest 158g LSWC-HP or Federal NyClad, any weight.

Wife carries S&W Airweight Bodyguard using 158g LSWC-HP (mine, natch).

IIRC Colt's Cobra may be more forgiving of +P ammo than S&W's alloy small-frame revolvers of the same vintage. But I don't believe that Colt's designed the Cobra to be a +P shooter. So my personal preference is to save potential wear and tear on a good gun and never shoot +Ps in mine. :)
