Coastal NC Hunting

I'm thinking of relocating from upstate NY to the Greenville NC Area. Whats the hunting like down there? I hunt pretty much anything-Deer, small game, up-land and water fowl. Are there Hogs down there? I was down there last week and I noticed it was very flat and open (compared to NY), and I didn't see any State Forests.

That is quite a drive from Greenville NC though. Close to 7 hours. There is a lot of areas to hunt in the piedmont and coastal region. We have quite a few that drive that way every year and usually do well.

Hogs, bear, waterfowl, turkey, deer, coyotes, small game. You name it.

There are quite a few gamelands down east. Take a look around www.ncwildlife.org for game lands maps. Holly Shelters Game Lands is about 61,000 acres and is not too far from Greenville (I don't think). It's mostly swamp though. Lots of scrub brush with big food plots planted sporadically through out. Road accessible through most of it unless it's flooded.

Was down there a few years ago when Wilmington got 17 inches of rain in a weekend. Roads looked like this:

We have so many white-tailed deer around here ( I live a short distance from G-Vegas) that many like to just hunt them with their vehicle. I got one last year and my son got two at one time. Saves the ammo for SD or range time. The two-fer was about 3,000 dollars to repair from front bumper to rear on driver's side. Lots of anything you mentioned. I have seen several coyotes lately. Duck hunting has been good this year, I've been told. There is a good shooting club just outside Greenville called Pitt County Wildlife. Folks there can tell you good places for hunting. http://www.pittcountywildlifeclub.org/

The real shooting fun is at night. Just stand in the middle of 5th street and listen for the gun shots and follow the smell of burnt powder.

I have to go along with
M.H. Ezzard
on the game in eastern NC. Depending on the exact area you will find all the above anaimals in great numbers. I drive down from VA to hunt every year for Deer & Bear mostly, we also hunt Quail, Doves etc.

Moyock area

I shot a nice 7 pointer of the top of my jeep in my back yard, gotta be ten feet with centerfire boomsticks! watched a black bear for about 2 hours eating something in the cut bean field 300 yds east of where i got the 7 pointer.

I lived in the mountains of NC (Hendersonville) in the mid-80's. The deer are very small and most hunted them on horseback due to the rough terrain. The more popular game animal with the friends I had were boars. Now those can be nasty! Deer are much bigger nearer the coast.

Brent,

That's just Gun.

Bow opens Mid Sept and there's a week of muzzleloading between the two (maybe 2 weeks this season, pending rule change).

That's the eastern region. Muzzleloader and Gun seasons are a little shorter in central and seasons overall are shorter in the mountains.

Eastern is 4 bucks and unlimited doe tags, Central and Western are 2 bucks with unlimited doe tags.

Any you can run dogs for deer...

Before I left the state I purchased a Lifetime hunting/fishing license.

Plan yer act before you act your plan...:D
Would the above quote be...
"Any where you can run dogs for deer?"
If so, I am curious too as I try to keep up with the dog/hunting laws.

Still legal in most counties

HB 1428 Prohibit Using Hunting Dogs to Deer Hunt (Rep Lewis)
05-15-09 / Bill Died, Defeated,or was Tabled
A county may by ordinance regulate the taking of deer with dogs. Notwithstanding the provisions of G.S. 153A-122, an ordinance enacted under the authority of this section shall apply throughout the county. An ordinance enacted under the authority of this section shall supersede any conflicting local act applying to the county to the extent of the conflict but may not have the effect of permitting activity with respect to hunting deer with dogs that is prohibited or more severely restricted by regulations of the Wildlife Resources Commission.

Deer Dogging.

Still legal in the most of the Eastern Region and Caswell County. Orange County just passed an ordinance banning it (had been illegal south of I85 in Orange for years, now county wide). Person County doesn't allow it. Nowhere in the Western Region allows it. It's mostly a down east thing.
