I saw an old thread about shotguns the U.S. Coast Guard carries. When I retired in 2005, they were still carrying the Remington 870 chambered in 3" magnum. It has a 14" rifled barrel, 4 round magazine tube and an ACOG-Reflex sight, nylon (plastic) pistol-grip stock with shoulder stock that has a "cutout" on either side of the rear stock for extra rounds. It is used with many different rounds from a 3" copper jacketed Sabot Slug for disabling small boat outboard engines; 00 buckshot, 3" magnum slugs and LTL (Less Than Lethal) rounds. LTL rounds include fin-stabilized rubber sabot slugs (@ .50 cal in size) and "sting ball" rounds similar to 00 buck rubber "bb's".
This gun replaced the standard military 870 with 4" magazine tube, wooden stock and conventional "bb front sight" and flattened receiver rear sight in the mid-90's.
The 870 replaced the Mossberg 500 in the early 80's.
