Thompson shooting an ‘accident’
By John Colson

“The July 27 shooting involving Hunter S. Thompson has been ruled accidental and no criminal charges will be filed,” local District Attorney Mac Myers said in a statement issued Tuesday.
Deborah Fuller, who was shot during the incident, apparently stepped into the line of fire just as Thompson was firing in front of a bear that had wandered between his house and Fuller’s cabin, according to the statement.
The bear, according to the statement, was not injured in the incident.
Thompson, internationally acclaimed author and a resident of Woody Creek, reportedly had discovered the bear on his property at around 7:30 a.m. He originally tried to scare it off by shouting at it, the statement read.
When the bear did not move off, Thompson went inside and got a .410-gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot. He also reportedly called Fuller to warn her to stay inside, but she didn’t answer the phone.
Hurrying back outside, he found the bear standing in the driveway near Fuller’s cabin and fired a shot at the ground in front of the bear, according to official statements.
Fuller, who had been in her bedroom at the back of the house, had heard noises and saw what she called “a big black thing” outside. She opened her door just as Thompson fired and found herself in the path of several pellets that apparently ricocheted upward from the ground, the DA reported.
Fuller was struck by four pellets, three in the thigh and one in the arm, causing “superficial” wounds, according to the DA.
She was treated at Aspen Valley Hospital and released that morning.
Myers wrote in the statement that he talked with Fuller about the matter, and that she “considers the incident an accident.”
According to Pitkin County Investigator Joe DiSalvo, who investigated the incident, “It’s important to note that Hunter is extremely sorry, remorseful about the whole thing. He truly didn’t want to hurt anybody, including the bear.”
